Having problems with your Toshiba PC Laptops ?

Kaspersky two hour virus scan

\015 I am using a toshiba satellite l505-s6959 laptop and tried Bit-defender and zone alarm security suites and encountered slowing down and long virus scans. I recently tried kaspersky security suite and it took 2 hours to do a scan. I contact them and finally received a reply after scanning my computer. The following is their reply and I find it difficult to understand all the problems or is this a compatibility problem on their part?\015\012 \015\012Thank you for your email. typically it takes 1 hour on a normal system (first time scanning to complete) but this depends on your system and on how many programs you have install. in your system, I see two things that is a concern. One WMI is giving or reporting error during boot up and many windows servicing on this machine (security updates) are failing. This points at corrupt OS. the message showing in your system \342\200\234Windows Servicing identified that package KB967723 (Security Update) is not applicable for this system\342\200\235 is related to either problem with service pack or the svchost file. You need to contact Microsoft not kaspersky in the aspect of your updates. Second you have problem with OS many drivers and services are failing to load at boot. One of this main services is WMI (windows management instrumentation). Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is the infrastructure for management data and operations on Windows-based operating systems. It provides a common interface and object model to access management information about your Operating system, devices, applications and services. If this service is stopped or is having problems, most windows based software will not function properly and any service depending on it will fail to start. You need to contact Microsoft at 1800-642-7676. I suggest you to get service pack 2 for vista. If you already have it, please contact Microsoft.\015\012 \015\012 \015

If your computer is having a wide variety of problems like this, I suggest a system recovery. Yes you can spend countless hours repairing the problems one by one, but it is just more cost/time efficient to start fresh. If you brought this into my shop I would charge a few hundred dollars to fix it without a reinstall of windows or I would charge $40-$60 for reinstalling windows and updates.

More thoughts:
Yes having security is nice, but it is really not needed if you do not have any sensitive files. When a virus is programmed, it is designed to circumvent most security features that the programmer thinks it will run into. Think of it as a false sense of security. If someone wants to gain entry to your pc, there is nothing you can do to stop them...you will only slow them down or discourage.

Personally I only use a virus scanner and Ad-Aware, neither run in real time. I will run a scan every few weeks and they always pick up the same thing...nothing. If you practice safe internet browsing habits, scrutinize any media you install and do not use Internet Explorer, this is an easy feat.

The more security you use, the slower your pc is going to run, Laptops are generally slower than a desktop computer, you need all the CPU/RAM you can free up.

If you just want a faster PC without fixing any of the problems you are experiencing then uninstall unused programs and edit your startup list. You can edit startup by running the System Configuration Utility. On Vista you can access this by opening up your start menu (bottom left hand side of screen, windows logo). Then type "msconfig" in the search bar and click on the return it gives you. Once the utility is open, you want the "startup" tab. Uncheck anything that is not needed to run when your computer starts up. If you are unsure of what a specific entry does, google the program/file name. After you are done, reboot. Upon logging back into your computer and getting to your desktop you will be greeted with a warning box stating that you have made changes. There will be a little check box at the bottom saying to check this if you do not want to warned next time you boot...click it and hit OK.

Hope this helps.
They suggest you get Service pack Two to try clear up some other problems you have.
\015\012Sounds sensible to me unless you dont have a valid copy of Vista
