Remote intermittently won't work with tv

I have an ACER Aspire 5600 laptop. The keyboard or mouse will not respond or function (apart from F2 and Alt/F10 which work intermittently). A remote mouse works but a remote keyboard does not. I have restored the laptop to its factory settings but still no keyboard or mouse. The only time that the keyboard worked was when I was tying in the details to restore the factory settings.
