Any touch will freeze my laptop IBM Thinkpad T42
\015 My IBM T42 thinkpad would not start all of a sudden. The battery and AC power supply seem to be working fine. But everytime I start the laptop, there is a blank screen..the hard drive icon also does not blink. However, if I persist and try starting it a a few dozen times, some time windows boots up and after a while everything freezes.I was able to transfer all the data from hard drive through a SATA/USB interface. So, the hard drive is also good. The CD tray also works...so the laptop is getting power.I suspect the problem is either to do with heat or some internal electrical connection. Would appreciate if someone could point me to some info on things I could try. Maybe a website that explains step-by-step or some general suggestions. The laptop was working fine till 3 days back.Thanks\015\012Shashi\015
There is a common problem with this machine; the mother board flexes and the processor mount partly separates from the motherboad. You tube posts a couple of solutions but they involve taking the laptop apart and applying heat from a heat gun to resolder the mount; it is not a solution for the faint hearted. Thinkpad/Lenovo might consider reparing the unit as it is basically a desgn/production defect but don't hold your breath.
This is an addition to the solution suggested by the person who recommended placing a thumb on the keyboard to right of the scroll pad just below the key board. I, too, have the problem described by everyone here. My computer freezes repeatedly. Sometimes it is during the first start up screen (the "IBM screen," sometimes while Windows is opening, sometimes when signing in and sometimes shortly after the computer is fully up and running. Occasionally - like others - I noticed that the movement of the computer seemed to affect this. However - I couldn't get the computer to function normally until reading the solution above. The one additional observation I have is that I don't believe this specific solution - "pressure to the right of the scroll pad" is necessarily the right solution for every computer, but some manipulation of the computer case or computer position IS the right solution. Thus, I've found that the computer works perfectly if I place a thin object (about 1/4") underneath the right, from corner of the computer does the trick. At another time I was using the computer on my lap and found that when the computer froze it would start again by slightly lifting the right front corner! Based on the comments here (and I tried several of the suggestions) plus my own experience, that this is not a software problem but rather something basically wrong (worn out, damaged) with the hardware. Thanks for the help to the person who suggested the pressure on the case.
