Need to replace memory in HP Pavilion a200y - HP PC Desktops

Answers :

Before starting this answer is so long that I have provided it in 4 different sections. The sections below are as follows: Required RAM Information, How to Install RAM, Verifying Installation of RAM, Link to newegg.com to purchase RAM.

Required RAM Information
This computer uses a standard memory size of 256 MB, which can be upgraded to 1 GB. The memory type is PC2100 DDR SDRAM DIMM. There are two sockets which are provided for inserting memory in this computer. In a moment I will provide you with a link to a good website called Newegg.com which sells computer memory and other computer products for low prices. But first let me explain how to go about installing the memory. First I would recommend upgrading to 1 GB if it is within your budget, as your computer will run alot faster. When purchasing the memory make sure that you get 2 512 MB sticks (modules) if you want to have 1 GB. Get 2 256 MB sticks (modules) if you want to have 512 MB, or get 2 128 MB sticks if you want to have 256 MB sticks (modules). The reason for this is because there are two sockets on your motherboard inside the computer for inserting RAM, and the two sockets work together, so they both need to have an equal amount of memory (RAM) in both sockets.

How To Install RAM
First power off and uplug the computer, thenopen up the computer, and make sure that you have it on a hard no carpeted surface when opening it up. (Carpet helps produce static electricity in your body and static electricity is BAD for computers). Since the computer is powered off and uplugged it will not hurt you to touch the outside metal casing of the power supply (just never take a power supply apart!). When you touch the power supply you will discharge any static electricity you have built up before touching any circuit boards or other sensitive computer components. The memory sticks should be next to each other and should have a little tab on both sides of the stick. Push the tabs down on both sides of each stick down at the same time (one stick at a time!). This should make the sticks pop up a little bit. You can then remove them. But make sure when handling computer memory or any other components that you never touch any of the computer chips or the little gold colored connectors. Take out both memory sticks and set them aside. Take out the new stick out of the bag (these bags are antistatic bags so they are good to stick any computer components in that you are not using, like those memory sticks you just removed!). Make sure to handle those sticks carefully. When inserting the memory sticks place your index finger on either end with your thumbs on top this way you can know that you are handling the stick properly and you can apply equal pressure to both sides when inserting the sticks. Don't provide to much pressure, just enough so that the sticks go in and the tabs pop into either side. When installing make sure that the notches on the bottom of the stick line up with what you see in the socket (these notches and keys are placed there to insure you install the sticks correctly). After this you can close up the computer case, plug it in and power it on. That is the method for installing the memory.

Verifying Installation of RAM
To make sure that the amount of memory you installed is what the computer reports, right click on my computer > click on properties > click on General Tab (if not already selected) This should show the amount of memory installed. If it is a little less than you installed this is because your video component uses a little bit of this memory and it is not reported.
