Time to take it to the repair shop.
\015\012I've seen instances where the thermal control unit goes bad and causes a similar problem.
Since you have not indicated what SYMBOL is on the "icon" you say is flashing, there are some other (less fatal) possibilities:

Your laptop may have been corrupted during ACPI suspend. Try this solution: Remove the battery AND the external AC Power supply (PSU).

Press and HOLD the start button for ONLY 6 seconds (nothing should happen here, this just clears PRAM).

Let laptop sit 5 minutes, then plug in ONLY the AC power supply and try starting the laptop.

If it starts, and runs normally, there are THREE possible causes for the problem that you must now identify, as follows:

Shut down the laptop

unplug the AC power supply

reinstall the battery

and then (again) re-connect the power supply.

If the laptop starts and runs normally now (including indication after time, that battery is recharging), it was only a corruption in the ACPI or hibernation functions.

However, if the original symptoms reappear now, then you have either:

1. A bad battery (dead cells can consume all of the PSU power and deny sufficient current to CPU/HD.

2. A defective power supply, unable to deliver sufficient current to BOTH the battery and laptop CPU/HD.

3. Or a bad power regulator circuit, which controls the distribution of power inside the laptop, and monitors the battery charge.

A voltmeter/ammeter can identify number 1 and 2 above, when output is compared to your laptop specs. If both are within tolerances, then number 3 is the problem. Hope not, because that is the most expensive possibility (it is usually cost prohibitive to replace a laptop motherboard). If you have no voltmeter, download and/or write down the voltage/current specs and take the battery and PSU to a repair shop and ask them to check these for you.
