\015 My HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop running on Windows XP has started experiencing various problems out of no where. First of all, it is incredibly slow to boot up, and then remains slow to even launch the simplest of programs, including IE. I haven't downloaded anything suspicious, only Firefox and a Flash and Java update - but it is since then that the computer has been running so slow... In addition to this, the sound is acting weird. I've tried streaming some music on Youtube when I first noticed that the sound keeps jumping in some parts, lagging in others, and seems to get stuck - almost like a broken record. This doesn't only happen when I'm online - music on iTunes as well as the sounds that appear when logging on and shutting down have the same problems.\015\012\015\012It takes roughly 10 minutes for the laptop to finish loading all programs when logging on, another 5 minutes just for Internet Explorer to open, and then another 2 minutes for the homepage to appear. After this, the internet runs relatively smoothly, except the sound problems continue.\015\012\015\012As mentioned before, I have no idea what may have caused this - it seems to have come out of no where, a day after installing Firefox and the Flash update. Today I removed both programs and rebooted the laptop, but to no avail.\015\012\015\012This doesn't seem to be virus or spyware related, as I'm running Windows Defender as well as an updated version of AVG. Scans are done daily, and nothing suspicious has shown up. In addition to this, I have done a disc clean up and have removed any programs that I'm not using and won't be using in the future. I've also used HijackThis (I have experience using it), but absolutely nothing suspicious has shown up there either.\015\012\015\012Any ideas what could be causing these issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated...\015
This sounds exactly like something I ran into a month or so ago, but at the moment I can't put my finger on the fix...
I think it would be worth while to run a scan with MBAM, despite having Defender and AVG come up with nothing. There's a lot of malware that can slip by some of the best security systems if you simply download from the wrong site. You can get a free copy here.
The other thing I recommend is that you run chkdsk on your system, to make sure there's not some kind of file corruption at fault. You can see the log from this in the event viewer under winlogon by opening the properties of the 1001 code after it runs. Instructions are here and here.
In fact, if you haven't already done so, I'd look through the logs in the event viewer and see what kind of errors are reported there. That could help a lot to point out the error. link here.
The sound issue could indicate outdated drivers as well, and if you have an older system that could have some out of date hardware in it, here's a good tutorial for remedying that. If you're in fact running xp, you might want to work through this article for the sound problem...there's a similar one for vista.
If you're on vista, there's some registry fix for that sound issue, but in that case get back to me and I'll look it up.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
