Having problems with your HP Compaq nc6000 Notebook ?

Compaq NC6000 would boot up once in a while, would die after a few minutes......

\015 Dear Mr Worldvet,Thank you for your response to the problem I posted. Before I got an answer from you, I have started looking up a Compaq service manual and had actually taken the notebook apart. I have taken out the keyboard and the metal plate underneath. Therefore I am not able to proceed with the F2 or F10 test that you mentioned. However, I could tell you that I could physically see the fan come on every time I hit the power key. Of course, sometimes the three L.E.D. s come on too and the system boots to Windows XP. I was able to run a slide show out out "My Pictures" for a few hours (with no keyboard) till I stop the unit. Yet sometimes, I will see the fan comes on for a few seconds when I hit the power switch, then nothing happens. Quite disappointing. So, the motherboard seems to working sometimes. The overheating is probably not the culprit. The fan does come on. I believe the RAMs are still O.K.. Any ideas ???Thanks again for your input.Rick Shum. [email protected]\015

If you go into the laptop and tighten the screw " very tightly" that connects the fan to the motherboard then use something to to move the cooling pipe "up",a little ,away from the ac jack connector on the motherboard then your grounding problem will stop. Most problems ,not all, that the nc6000s have are ground/connection related.Sometimes though it is a solder problem with the MAX chip where heat has caused cracks in the solder and causes connection problems because of flexing from the display hinges at the motherboard. In that case the solder would need to use hot air to carefully reflow the solder solid to regain a good connection.I would first try to regain ground by doing what i suggested in the beginning of this [email protected]
The fan will go off if cooling is not needed as the CPU cools down, and then go on. There is a thermal sensor underneath the CPU. That sensor can fail and no matter what the board is going to shut down, working fan or not.

Did you notice a collection of dust, lint or other debris on or in the fan? This might affect the cooling ability.

Otherwise there are a lot of reasons that XP will hang. Many of these in tower PCs are related to power supplies.

If you're using an external power supply with batteries installed to rule out one thing I'd suggest removing the external power supply and run on batteries and time how long you can work in the desktop. Once the batteries drain, if this is very shortly, reattach the external power supply and see if XP hangs up sooner than usual. If this is the case, it means the regulator on the battery that tells the laptop when to charge and when to stop is faulty and or the external power supply is no longer supplying regulated amperage but the amperage supplied to the notebook is oscillating and those power dips are hanging XP.

Of course this is pure speculation. When I bring a laptop in for service on a difficult case such as yours I take it through a systematic series of tests to rule in or rule out components. This is the basic technique to troubleshoot logic systems, which a computer is of course. I have an expensive power supply that I can set the voltage and amperage to and connect it to a laptop to rule in/out an external power supply. I usually take them to a friend who puts them on an oscilloscope with a dummy load and measure the voltage regulator for performance within tolerances.

Another thing to do is repair your XP installation. You have to have your Compaq supplied Windows disc. This is asking a lot as Compaq was famous for not supplying one. The courts ruled in favor of the consumer and they have to give you one on request. You start the installation process from your CD and boot from it by setting the boot order in your system bios setup screen by pressing F10 usually for Compaq/HPs and F2 for Dell and some others. Anyway, the installation starts and you let it proceed normally until it alerts you to the fact that a Windows installation already exists. At this point you will see two options, proceed with new installation or Repair. You choose repair and XP is pretty darn good at healing itself. This resolves a lot of problems and is one thing I always do when a computer is in for service.

A lot of the other things we do are pretty esoteric. So, if the power supply is ruled out at being at fault and the battery holds a decent charge and reinstalling XP doesn't resolve the problem you will need to take this in to a decent shop with a good reputation of being thorough, honest and straight talking with you. You may have to ask around to find one or ask your chamber of commerce.

BTW, error reports in XP are mostly meaningless as a daisy chain of events occur in a failure and the error code usually relates to the last one in the chain not the reason for the event happening.

If you have trouble finding a shop to work on your Compaq you have two choices you can use the shop finder on our home page by entering your zip code for a shop near you or you can consider getting another notebook. I know, sort of giving up on an old friend sometimes. But you'd be surprised what you can get for your money these days. I do a lot of consulting for college bound kids' parents this time of year and I've already gotten one family into a basic machine for $400 and another for $550. If $700-800 is in your range I can recommend many notebooks for you. You can ask it won't cost you anything.

So, you can try the above ideas and by the way a good electronics shop might check out your external power supply for free if you ask to see if the voltage curve is within margin and they can test you battery too to see if its at the end stage of its life cycle.

Feel free to ask any other questions you may have and when you reassemble you laptop remember there shouldn't be any extra screws left over. Ha Ha....

Worldvet
