Computer cycling trying to start - Gateway PC Desktops

Answers :

System cycling can be caused by a number of problems.

First: try using F8 on startup and go to "Last Known Good Configuration." You could also try booting up using a recovery disk and repairing the installation. If that doesn't work, there are a few other options:

Try booting to the Windows XP CD-ROM and go to the recoveryconsole. Once there copy the USERINIT.EXE from the CD or from anotherworking PC to the windows system32 directory. Once done, reboot .

It could be that RAM has failed or has gotten dirty. Try removing your ram and cleaning it with an electrical cleaner like Truvolt, and then replacing it.

Or it could be caused by processor overheating. Click delete, F1, or F10 when your computer starts to go into your BIOS and look for PC Health > Temperature (or similar). This should show you the current temperature of the computer and theemergency shutdown temperature. The emergency shutdown temperature is asafeguard for when your computer gets too hot it will shut itself downto prevent damage.

You can either raise the shutdown temperature or switch it off completely, however be warned that you may damage your computer (or the clients) if the computer gets too hot.If the temperature was causing the reboots then you should considergetting better cooling for the computer such as more powerful CPU fansand more case fans.

Your computer could be set to reboot on a system failure. Try getting in via safe mode by tapping F8 on startup.

Then go to “My Computer” and choose “Properties”. Goto the “Advanced” Tab and under “Startup and Recovery” press the “Settings” button.

Under the “System Failure” box there will be a checkbox saying “Automatically Restart”. Untick this box and click Ok.

On your next restart you'll see a blue screen with technical details. Create a new problem report with these. Or you can diagnose with the following list: http://www.technibble.com/troubleshooting-windows-stop-errors-what-they-mean-in-english/

While you're in safe mode, you can also use your event veiwer to see if there are any error messages that explain the reboot. Start> Run, type “eventvwr” -- please share these as well or google them for information and share this.

You could also have corrupt boot files or a virus. If you can get into safe mode, you might want to consider copying data to an external hard drive and using your manufacturer restore discs. If you can't get into safe mode and your data is already backed up, you might also consider this.

If its cycling and doesnt seem to get past the point of intial boot screen, then your power supply might not be enough or it is having serious issues. replacing a power supply is relativly easy, every plug on it goes to only certain things. Basically, and no offense intended from this, Its idiot proof, or as near idiot proof as possible.

Only other Issue that i can see that the computer would be cycling is if the boot files somehow became corrupted to the point that the system is trying to get past it, but just cant quite, which means you either need to use the system recovery disk or if that is either not working or not possible, then you will need to reinstall the entire system
