\015 What other information do you need, we have it opened up right now.\015\012There is no lights, sounds or anything. That is the only number on the back, G\015

Answers :

Hello again,

Unfortunately, there's a lot of information that I need, and you may have difficulty providing it. Let's start with clarifying your comments.

When you say "opened up", do you mean (1) you've opened the "clamshell" like you're trying to use it, or (2) do you mean you've unscrewed the back from the bezel and you've started disassembly? If you are considering the latter, please see #2 below before proceeding further

Also, I'm unclear on the line "that is the only number on the back, G" - - doesn't make sense to me, looks like your response got truncated.

There's an awful lot of ground we could cover; I'm trying to make it as easy and direct as I can by breaking this into the following items for your consideration.

1. Since you stated that you're fairly tech-savvy, and you've verified that you have a good battery and good power to the point where it enters the laptop, I think you're probably going to have to look inside. Unfortunately, that generally rules out the simple/ (and typically cheap/free) solutions. Generally, when I see a sudden catastrophic failure, the first likely suspect is the power supply - in this case, where it proceeds from the entry point into the laptop.

2. Also, you say it's a 7-month-old "refurb". Did you get any kind of warranty with that (I would expect a factory refurb to have at least a 1-year warranty)? If you have a warranty, digging around inside is liable to void that, so we need to know if you're willing to "go in". If you have a warranty, I'd be inclined to exercise that option first, based on the symptoms you've described so-far.

3. Have you done hands-on electronics work before, and know what kind of anti-static and other precautions to take? With laptops, it's less a matter of worrying about getting zapped by high voltage, unless you're working on the 110V side of the transformer; usually, there's more risk of damage to the laptop components. Alternatively, is there someone you can tap for hands-on repairs if you decide to go that way?

4. The basic components that you have to have are Power, CPU, Motherboard and Memory. If you can isolate these components for testing, it will help.

I'm going to offer you a couple of pretty good troubleshooting websites you can go to to narrow things down. While this may seem like a cop-out on my part, I think you'll be better served if you can browse through the troubleshooting tutorials and guides, since you may notice things that we haven't discussed already, and hopefully get an answer sooner that way. You can always write me back if this doesn't work.

Gateway Support Site:

(for an overview of Gateway's support site, and among the links in the lower right-hand corner,)

I'm also going to include this link, which has a real handy flow-chart for troubleshooting.

You may also want to consider buying the E-book - I have, and feel it's very useful resource. The author covers the spectrum of issues involving laptop repair, including figuring out if it's worth the effort on page 18 - and you need to be cognizant of this before you spend too much time on a repair when you should be planning data recovery (if needed) and installation on a new machine.

(No I have no financial interest in this book.....(;^]).....wish I did)

As always, if I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

If this solves the issue (or at least puts you in-touch with someone who can), please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance for using Fixya.com,
