Dell Latitude D800 PC - Fan-2-CPU problem
\015 I've had this hyper-expensive Dell D800 for 2.5 years.\302\240 Within the first few months, I started having mouse trouble.\302\240 For no reason, the mouse pointer would just fly off to a random corner of the screen.\302\240 Since I was playing a lot of games back then, this made playing impossible.\302\240 I notified Dell and they had me mail the machine back to them.\302\240 I did, they returned it (or a replacement) and said it was fine...but it wasn't.\302\240 Next, they sent an on-sight guy to fix it (twice) and after replacing the whole keyboard area, he said it was fine.\302\240 Again, it wasn't and I got mad that I spent all that money for a machine that couldn't do anything.\302\240 So, I put it in the closet.\302\240 2 years later, I am using it again.\302\240 Now mostly for watching DVD's at the office.\302\240 The mouse problem is moot since I mostly use it to hit play and thats all.\302\240 Now, anywhere between 15 seconds and an hour, at random times, a fan in the top left hand area of the box kicks on 3X louder than the normal fan and all of the sudden, the CPU usage slams to 100% and the video gets so choppy you can't use it.\302\240 An instant reboot and the problem goes away...then, somewhere between 15 seconds to an hour later, it happens again.\302\240 It can't be a heat issue becuase it has happened before the pc reaches the desktop after being off over night and other times after the reboot, it can go another hour before the fan kicks in (can't cool off that much in a 30-second reboot).\302\240 I assume it is a short (what he said last time), but after 3 complete keyboard replacements, how likely can that be?\015
There's a second fan beneath the keyboard, you need to pry open the top panel where the power buttons are, then remove 2 screws for the keyboard to come off. When I did this, I saw the second fan with dust blocking it. I used a vaccum cleaner and my D800 works perfect again. One reason why the top left corner fan runs at full speed is that it reacts to the other fan being disabled, kind of like an emergency detour for the heatsink.
Well the mouse pointer just goto calibration in control panel its hard to miss and the freak out thing....sounds like a lemon processor or a bad heat sink

Dell Latitude D800 fan runs all of the time. This is a fan at the upper left hand corner of the laptop and it runs at a very high speed. Reboots do not help.
