Since you didn't specify what's actually happening it might be hard for me to provide an accurate solution for the problem. I don't know what type of router you have and I don't know if it was working before or you just bought that router.

If it's a new router
- You have to connect the wireless router first to your laptop via ethernet cable so you can access the configuration page of the router and configure the router for the internet connection

- The configuration of your router will depend on what type of Internet Connection you have if it's a DSL/Broadband or Cable Internet conection. If it's a DSL that requires username and password you will choose PPPoE for it requires authentication. If it's a cable internet connection all you have to do is clone the MAC address of your modem and it'll work properly.

If it was working before and suddenly stopped working.
- You may need to power cycle the pc/modem/router. When I say power cycle. You will turn off the computer then unplug the power cord of the router and the modem let's include the ethernet cable as well. Wait for a minute then plug the power cord of the modem and the ethernet cable. Wait for a minute again then plug the power cord of the router and the ethernet cable coming from the modem. Wait for a minute and turn on the computer.

- There are instances that you might reset the router to factory settings and reconfigure it to connect to the internet.

If the router is far from your laptop and can't acquire signal
- try to go near the router and see if it'll acquire a signal
