Having problems with your Dell Inspiron 710m Notebook ?

710m Fails Power On

\015 Hello,\015\012\015\012My laptop froze in Windows and won't boot after a cold boot. Basically the power button lights up and the fan spins, but no POST. The internal speakers don't work so I can't get any audibles. \015\012\015\012I tried booting after removing the battery with power unplugged with the same result. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!\015

Hello,

This can be caused by a few different reasons.

1. Does your CD/DVD drive open when you push the eject button? No? Maybe the drive is bad and your computer is setup to boot from this drive first so it just sits there waiting for the drive to respond. If you are able to, you can remove the drive to test. It may not allow you to even boot into BIOS otherwise. When booting, do you see anything on the screen?

2. Your hard drive may be bad. Your drive should have a restore partition on the drive. When booting, hit F12 to enter the Dell utilities/restore utility or whatever Dell calls it. If you can enter this area, maybe only your main partition is damaged. At this point, you may need to have a technician look at it because it may be your last chance to recover any files on the drive. If you don't care about losing your data, you can continue the recovery procedure to restore your computer to factory conditions. Again, you WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA AND PROGRAMS. I've seen drives that lose their data but continue to function fine after a reinstall. If this is the problem, it would explain why your computer froze then stopped working on reboot. If you are familiar with Linux, you can download a live CD and backup your data and/or see if your drive is readable at all.

3. Your display has a backlight. This backlight can go bad. If this is the problem, you won't see anything on the screen. To test this, get a flash light (the brighter the better) and shine it at the screen while the computer is on. You may need to try it from different angles to see something. If your backlight is bad, you should be able to see something (windows, your icons, etc.) on the screen when you shine the flashlight. On your model, I don't know how easy this would be to fix. Another way to test this is to plug in an external monitor. You may have to cycle through the settings using the F8 (or whatever key on your notebook controls the external display). If it's the backlight or display that's bad, you may get an image on the external monitor.

Hope that helps.
