\015 I have been having some problems lately with my dell inspiron 1420 laptop. After being on for a short period of time, my screen starts to get pixalated lines running horizontally in bunches and soon after the laptop freezes completely. Is this a video card problem? or is my heatsink not properly dissapating heat from the cpu?\015

Sounds like a video problem. In my experience, when a CPU heats up, the video does not necessarily go bad, but the computer just freezes. After it cools down, then it starts OK again.
In your case, the video chip also has a heat sink, I believe. This may very well not be contacting the video chip. If it were me, I'd take the heat sink off, clean it and apply some thermal grease and reattach it to see if the problem goes away.

Yes you might be right, it can be the video card.

You can try to run some test first to make sure.

First, if you have an external monitor plug it in the computer then check if the horizontal lines
are still there, if it is then you'll definitely need to replace the video card, but if not then you might wanna check the LCD.

If you don't have an external monitor try to check this things first.

1. Check LCD if it is the one causing the problem.
Run the LCD test by pressing D + POWER while the computer is off,. if it is not working try to run
the diagnostics in the computer the it will flash colored
bars then say no to it it will test the LCD,
If you don't see the horizontal lines on the LCD test
then its a video card problem and if you see it its a LCD problem.

Just want to give you a heads up, you may be including the motherboard for the replacement
because your video card is integrated to it and replacing the fan heatsink can help resolve the problem.
