Having problems with your Dell Dimension 4700 PC Desktop ?

Dell dimension 4700 power supply fan has gotten very loud

\015 I replaced the CPU fan, because I couldn't tell which fan was so noisy all of a sudden. I did clean out inside the chassis, also. The air blowing out is not particularly hot. The pitch of the fan sound does rise and fall. Should I be worried about my power supply or anything else? Thanks for any advice.\015

Answers :

All the above answers are correct to some extent. Problem is that your fan hasn't stopped. It's hard to diagnose something that isn't broken.

Depending upon how critical the computer and your finances, your fix could be:\015\012 \015\012 \015\012 \015\012

1: Do nothing and wait for it to stop working.
2. Spray fans with DW40 and wait for it to eventually stop working.
3. Replace first one, then the other fan.
4. Replace both fans at the same time.
5. Replace computer.

The best way to test to see what fan is noisy, is to turn on your computer and tap each fan in the middle lightly, if the nosie stops for a second, you've found your fan. The best way to clean a dirty fan is a can of compressed air, and follow directions carefully.

I wouldn't be worried about your power supply fan. Unless it has hair on it from any animals, than I would give it a couple quick sprays of air. It sounds like you did a good job. :)

My Dell Dimension E510 is making a "whirring" noise. It whirls loudly when I turn it on, like something inside is struggling to get up to speed. The computer takes more time than usual to become operable and open programs. Then with the computer on, the "whirring" comes and goes, it is more quite, but more uneven. Sounds like it's going fast sometimes, then speeds up and back and forth. I've opened the computer and cleaned the dust out of it. That didn't help. HELP. VHS

So what could make "whirring" sounds in a computer? Motors. What has motors? Fans, Hard Disc Drives, Floppy Drives and CD/DVD ROM Drives. I can't think of anything else. It doesn't sound like a CD/DVD/Floppy drive because you would only hear the nois ... Dell Dimension E510 PC Desktop
