Hello there, you will need to use an external USB cd rom drive. It may have built in recovery, to access that you will need to contact ASUS support to verify if it's built into the system.

Otherwise you can use an external USB cd rom drive and put the cd in that, go into the CMOS and set boot option to CDROM first. You will only be able to do this AFTER the cd rom drive is attached to the system.

I would, however, recommend you give ASUS a call first at 510-739-3777, as soon as the command prompt answers just hit 0 for a live person.

Chances are though you will need to use the external USB cd rom, so sorry about that =(.

Linux drivers troubles do not cause problems affecting just part of the screen, the display does not work at full resolution, and that is all.

If the system is corrupted, it can just fail leaving a screen in weird colors, the screen fuzzy let me think that this is not a system problem , but rather an hardware problem. System must be reinstalled to find out.
If this is not a system problem, fuzzy colored lines that appear suddenly on part of the screen let think of an hardware fault related to the display adapter, LCD ribbon cable or LCD screen.

You can try reinstalling Linux, or installing Windows to test the Laptop, or also try installing Windows or Linux on memory card and start from solid state disk (eg SD card). To reinstall the system you can use an external optical drive (eg.CD) or an USB memory.

Try also replacing RAM (or have it tested at a shop) in some rare occasion a faulty RAM can cause the computer to freeze when the exception occurrs.

If that does not work, either the video adapter/mainboard or LCD ribbon cable or LCD panel is faulty.

You find out if it is the display adapter or LCD by connecting the computer to an external monitor. If it is the LCD you have picture on external display, if it is Display Adapter/Motherboard fault, then you get no picture on external display.
