DVD-RW Suddenly burning slower and playing dvd's and music with a choppy lag

\015 Happened about a few days ago, was burning a dvd of about 4GB that would normaly take about 10 minutes, and it for some reason took an hour. Same with everything else I was burning from then onwards.Today put a DVD in and everything was playing with a choppy lag, the sound kept pausing and playing with computery sounds, and picture kept jerking. Tryed a CD which was less bad but still had simalar problems. No effect on video files, iso discs or data files, they seem ok. Its like the DVD-RW is now slower all of a sudden and can barly play DVD's and CD's. Already tired a DVD cleaner disc and blowing dust off.I have an Acer Aspire 5630 with HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N DVD-RW, any help I would be vey much greatful for.\015

I had exactly this problem! Took me ages to work out what was wrong, but fixed it in the end. The answer: windows had downgraded the disk controller transfer mode from DMA to PIO, whatever that means. It happens if windows encounters problems burning discs more than four times in a row, or something like that. What you do to set it back to DMA mode is:

1) Open the Device Manager, ie. right click My Computer and select Manage, then when the Computer Management window pops up select Device Manager in the left-hand pane.
2) In the right-hand pane double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Then double-click Primary IDE Channel.
3) In the little Properties window that opens, select the Advanced Settings panel. Then in the Transfer Mode dropdown select DMA If Available. Click OK
4) Do the same for the Secondary IDE Channel
5) Reboot yr laptop

Happily you fixed yours already, but this is what to do if it happens again. Such a crappy operating systimmmm!

This is going to be a software glitch. Start by removing and reinstalling the program or programs used for playing and burning CD/DVD's. Then uninstall the drivers for the DVD drive from the device manager and reboot. The machine will find the DVD drive and reinstall the drivers automatically. This will refreshen the drive and software, and should get you back up to speed. If you continue to have the problem, then look for any software that may be conflicting with each other, ie... two different burning programs. Two like programs can conflict at any time due to the program language, settings, or if the two are fighting for which operates the drive, so if you have multiple burning or playing programs, you may want t only use one. A common cause is when a machine comes with the program, but the owner doesn't like the user friendliness or the way it operates, and downloads another to use without removing the existing program. Don't know if this applies to you, but it's a thought.
