Having problems with your PC Laptops ?

Wireless button won't switch to on and i can't access web wirelessly. how to i repair this

Answers :

Their is a possibility that your laptop went into a low power state, and someone accidentally switched the wireless switch off physically then powered back on. if this is the case the issue would be the laptop had a image of the files and how they were when the laptop went into low power state.

when the laptop was powered back up. i believe the laptop thought the wireless was active but infact was switched off. using a system restore point usually will allow the laptop to use the settings that were present when it last worked. they are called system checkpoints and you can use them to get the system working with wireless enabled.

Being that this is actually not the problem. their are several things that can cause the laptops wireless card to fail. i will go threw the problems and possible solutions now.

on some laptops their is a function button that is on the bottom left of most keyboards, if you look closely the letters are actually a different color then the rest of the keys. if you look at the far top at the fkeys youll notice the two are labled with that same color. usualy they use blue. now by pressing the fn key and holding it down hit one of the blue keys on the top. they are often followed by a icon image like a battery or a wireless antenna. if you see the antenna go ahead and hold the fn key down and also hit the antenna key. if this worked your wireless icon will appear on the system tray by the clock on the lower right side on your task bar.

if this worked then the problem was the wireless shortcut key must have been accidentally pressed at the same time as the fn key. it actually happens.

Still not working? lets continue further.

With wireless cards running windows xp the system can show you the drivers associated with the hardware device. if you hit the windows key located on your left side of your keyboard you will bring up the start menu, if you know how to get to the start menu please click in now. then select the my computer with the right mouse button.

(the left mouse button selects and the right mouse button opens a menu for the selected thing.)

please select manage from the menu.

this is the device manager. here we can see all the physicaly installed devices recognised by windows. if you can see a yellow or red mark on anything this indicated that the device driver has somehow become corrupted or removed. the simplest fix is to again use system restore and go to a time called a system checkpoint when things worked properly.

another fix if no checkpoint is found would be to go to the site of the manufacturer who made your laptop and enter the support page on that website.

example Toshiba www.csd.toshiba.com
example Hp welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

example acer http://www.acer.com/worldwide/selection.html
example apple laptops http://support.apple.com/downloads/#portablecomputers
example sony vio http://www.sonystyle.com

download the proper drivers for your laptop. if you do not know the proper driver refer to the hardware specs and see what it has then use the proper software. avoid downloading anything to do with bios and flashing. also avoid the word firmware. this literally means to overwrite the internal code that the laptop relies on to load the system. without it they would not even work at all. we call that a bricked laptop. if you accidentally install firmware and brick a laptop most manufactures will not help you and you would need to either replace the whole mother board or get a new laptop.

now we are looking in the section called networking. usually they are aligned in tabs on the site we can click them to expand the category and select the proper device. if you have an lintel wireless card you would look for it in the networking category. once you see the right file for your particular model. go ahead and download it to a folder on your desktop or a place where you will remember it. then open or run the file and install the files associated with it. you probably will be prompted by windows that the file is not digitally singed. usually it is safe to allow and continue installing the device drivers for the physical device. the wifi cards today can mostly be installed with a vista machine in this same manner only select the appropriate operating system. and make note of the system being a 64bit operating system or a 32 bit one.

the above advice should be sufficient to fix and trouble shoot the wireless connection problem.

good luck and thank you for using Fixya.
Hi Torriessmith,
I understand that you are facing some problem with your wireless adapter.
Please follow the below steps to solve your problem:
1. Make sure that the driver for your wireless adapter is installed or not.
2. If not installed, then please use the driver cd which came along with your laptop and install the needed drivers and restart your computer.
3. Once the drivers are properly installed, then you can see a wireless network kind of icon your system tray (bottom right corner where time is displayed)
4. If not shown, then try switching on your wireless by provided keyboard button or any other slider type of switch present in your laptop.
5. Once the wireless network icon is displayed, then click on it and find some option there to search wireless networks.
6. If you are already having wifi internet router in your office/ home, then you should be shown that network. select and connect to it.
provide the password of your wireless network if prompted.

I hope this is helpful to you.
If you find any problem in following the above steps, then please provide your concerns in the comments. Also please provide some more informations about your laptop/ PC model, operatin system, etc as it may help me to assist you well.
