Answers :

You can connect your HDD as primary or secondary, doesn't make any difference, anyway as you said I also suggest you to put it as primary. When you insert the Windows XP installation disk and you boot from your CD-Rom it will shows you all the disk and partition asking where do you want to install it.

\015\012\015\012

(To boot from CD you have to enter in the BIOS and change the device priority at boot, let me know if you know how to do that)

\015\012\015\012

At this point from the installation of XP you select your HDD, select to format as NTFS (Better then FAT32) and you start the installation.

\015\012\015\012

At the end of the installation Windows XP will modify your MBR (Master Boot Record) to add a dual boot including Win95.

\015\012\015\012

Be carefull that at  the end of the installation from XP you will be able to read files on the old HDD containing Win95 but not viceversa, because Win95 cannot read NTFS partitions.

I bought a couple of used Dell Optiplex GX520s with 40GB HDD, CD-ROM and Win XP Home installed. Without changing the BIOS settings, I replaced the 40GB HDD with a 1TB one running Win XP Pro (partitioned with a 4GB C and 320GB D E and F drives). That worked fine. But when I replaced the CD-ROM with a DVD burner, the computer kept hanging. When I put the CD-ROM back, I got the blue screen of death.
