Having problems with your PC Desktops ?

Hi guys,I have a linksys router hooked up and my desktop connection is fine. My laptop however, tells me my connectivity is limited, despite an excellent signal

Go to your desktop and login to the router, the manual should have the default ip and username/password, or google that info, once your in check the number of dhcp leases and make sure it is set to about 2 more than the number of PC's you have, I have a problem with mine like this because i always forget to count for the devices on my network that arent actually PC's and of course the nintendo wii takes an ip as well, then go to the wireless settings, make sure wireless is enabled the channel is set to 6 or higher to reduce interference, 11 is usually the best choice. then head to the wireless security tab, make sure it is all off for now, if your router has SES do not press the cisco logo button on the front of it I recommend not using the SES(its easy setup for wireless security). once this is done grab the laptop, i would recommend bringing to near the desktop and router all in one room if possible, now the operating system on the laptop becomes important, hopefully you have xp and not vista, for many reasons,  first you want to try refreshing your ip. you will need to go to the start menu then to control panel, then switch to classic view, this will make finding things a lot easier, then look for network connections. inside the network connections control panel you should see some items like local area connection and local area connection 2, one of those is your wireless card, generally it will be number 2 but that is not always the case. right click on it and then from the context menu select repair, it may take a minute but then it may be working afterward, if not then try opening  the wireless card connection (double click) then click on the properties button then in the new window double click tcp/ip settings another new windows should appear, it should have radio buttons marked that say obtain ip address automatically and another that says obtain dns auto.... this would normally be just fine try changing to a static address, the use the following address option, now you need to come up with an ip yourself, here how that works... find the default ip of the router, it is the default gateway to the pc, it will probably be something like so you want to keep that address scheme( you absolutely have to, an IP address is like a mailing address, if its not right then you'll never get any communications through) so your  laptops IP should be something like note in this case that the 192.168.1. part must stay in this ip( its a class c) the last section can be anything other than the router, which will either be .1 or .254 unless you changed it or the default is something else which it usually isnt. the subnet mask should end up try using tab to skip it and windows may just set it for you, the default gateway is the routers address, for dns it can be left blank or add the router ip as the preferred, then click ok on the last two windows and close on the status windows, try the connection again, if the problem continues go back to the network connection control panel and do another repair and try again, if it still doesn't work try setting the radio buttons back to automatically get an ip and automatically discover dns server, then go to the start menu and then run and type cmd, a command prompt will open, type ipconfig /release then hit enter and when that finishes type ipconfig /renew then hit enter and it should attempt to get an ip, should be working after all that, sorry it seems so long and complicated after you set a few of these up it becomes almost second nature. it looks and sounds harder than it really is, just read everything carefully and take your time, don't mean to sound condescending or anything but a lot of people who say they aren't any good with computers is usually because they are impatient and expect the machine to know what they want it to do without reading what it displays or even trying to understand what the computer is doing. good job on buying linksys though, its about the best brand for home networking equipment. also to make refreshing your ip easier you can make a bat file containing the following text:\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\[email protected] off\015\012ipconfig\015\012pause\015\012ipconfig /release\015\012ipconfig /renew\015\012ipconfig\015\012pause\015\012
\015\012hope this helps , good luck
