Sounds like the surge supressor part of the ps did it's job and the unit needs to be replaced now.

Unplug the printer. Generally, a UPS is to let you safely save your open files or documents and safely shut down. It is not really meant to keep everything such as printers and other items running.
\015\012If it is a laser printer, that is the problem.
\015\012If you have an older CRT monitor, that uses a large portion of the battery power capacity.

Also, never plug in a "heater" into a UPS.
