Having problems with your Toshiba Satellite M60 Notebook ?

Need specs: CMOS battery for Toshiba Satellite M60 notebook, Euro

\015 I have had recurring problems with my otherwise much-loved Toshiba Satellite M60 notebook computer. It is the French keyboard model, and now the Toshiba people are telling me that because of that, I can't get a replacement CMOS battery for it, and simply replace the CMOS battery, as that is the only truly imperative repair it needs at this time. The only problems I have had with this computer are as follows:1) it is subject to problems with overheating -- and did not like our record-breaking heatwave here in South Australia last year. I had to have the heat sink serviced, and the thermal grease insulating the CPU replaced, which solved that problem.2) it has slowly been developing "lines" on the monitor screen, where a column of pixels will reach the state of having two of the colour channels on full all of the time. So, I've got a set of yellow stripes (where the red and green channels are on full), cyan stripes (ditto, with the blue and green channels), and fuschia stripes (again, ditto, with the red and blue channels this time). As long as the computer is on, those channels will be on full in each of those columns -- but the remaining channel in each column still reacts properly, so if, for instance, the computer screen is white, the problem is completely unnoticeable, because those channels are SUPPOSED to be on full in those columns. On the other hand, if the screen is black in a region, they stand out like stripes on a circus tent. This appears to be a result of the screen aging, and will be resolved when/if I replace the LCD screen. However, the worst problem is this: I've reached the point of built-in obsolescence for this computer, the point at which the CMOS battery fails. With a normal computer, that just means that, if you know what you're doing, you identify the problem, replace the CMOS battery, and everything is fine again. However, according to the folks at Toshiba, the CMOS battery on this European model is "on the mainboard", and "cannot be replaced without replacing the mainboard". I'd be quite willing to do the work of the battery replacement myself, but I *NEED* to get the specifications for the battery, so I can buy an appropriate replacement. So, does anybody know the specifications for the CMOS (BIOS) battery on a French/European model Toshiba Satellite M60 notebook computer? I'd be really grateful for any information or guidance on this issue. Thanks in advance for any help offered! :D\015

Sounds like you have several problems to solve.
\015\012The LCD screen might only need the the video ribbon cable connector reseating otherwise it could be a video card problem. Connect an external monitor to the laptop, power up the monitor then boot up the laptop, if you see a normalimage on the monitor the the video card id OK and the fault is the LCD screen.
\015\012Check out www.lcdpart.com for parts & DIY info.
\015\012In most laptops the CMOS battery are button 3 volts lithium batteries or a button battery with a short lead and connector. Most are relatively easy to access, either at the bottom of the laptop under one of the panel/s next to the RAM or modem modules (maybe slightly hidden under the edge of the panel opening) or under the keyboard which is a bit harder to get to.
\015\012When you remove the battery, measure the voltage with a
\015\012multi-meter, it most likely be up to 0.5 volts below the nominal voltage of a fresh battery. The old battery most likely will have the voltage marked on the battery.
\015\012If the video card is faulty it might be time to upgrade. You can use the hard drive from this laptop and put it into a USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB drive.
\015\012I'm in Sydney and I felt the heat from Adelaide last summer, my relatives kept me up to date on how hot it was.
