How to access windows drive to backup data through using the recovery disk

\015 My satellite laptop can't enter Windows at the moment, not even through safe-mode. Is there anyway to access the data inside the windows drive without actually going into Windows? I was thinking if its possible using the recovery disk, but I'm unsure of the commands etc. Please help anyone\015

Answers :

You are in luck. There is a wide variety of solutions available to you, but which you can use will depend upon your configuration. You will need access to another computer that is working, and has a cd-burner and an Internet connection.

Go here:

http://www.download.com/UBCD4Win/3000-2086_4-10550208.html?part=dl-UltimateB&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=10861574

Download it (300+ MB) and burn it. Once burned, insert it into the optical drive on your laptop. Turn on the laptop, and it should automatically boot from the cd. If it doesn't, You will need to reboot the laptop an get into the BIOS utility. This is done when the POST screen is up, which may be just a simple black screen with lettering, or it may be an elaborate logo from the maker of the laptop. There are usually instructions on this screen to the effect of "press [key] to enter Setup". Depending how your laptop is configured, these instructions may not appear. If not, the key will still work, it has just been set not to display. You will have to hit a key during the POST screen to enter setup. This key will be one of the following, depending upon your manufacturer:

F1, F2, F9, F10, Esc, Del, or (rarely) a combination of keys. I can tell you for sure if I know who made the laptop.

Once inside the setup utility, navigate to a screen that gives Boot options. This may be called "Boot Options", "Boot Settings", Boot Order" or some such, again depending on your manufacturer. Make sure the CD- or DVD-ROM is at the top of the list. Exit setup, being sure to save your changes.
The machine will automaticly reboot, and boot from the cd drive. If it does not automaticly reboot, it's because your changes were not saved.

Once in the live boot desktop environment, you should be able to find your way to your hard drive, and any files you need can be transferred to a USB stick from there.

If you encounter a password or encryption problem, let me know, as that would be too much for me to put here if you don't need it.

If you are for some reason un-able to do the above, you may be able to boot your machine from a USB memory stick, though this is rather involved, and I won't put it here unless I know you need it.

Failing that, you can hook the laptop up to another machine and boot it from a cd, floppy drive, or USB stick and network with it to remove the files.

The last option is to remove the hard drive and place it either in another laptop (not recommended unless the laptop has two separate drive slots because if it does boot in the new laptop, windows will go nuts about the new hardware) that has a CD-ROM and do as above, or get a special drive cage that allows you to hook it via USB or your internal SATA or IDE to a desktop PC. You can find one here:

http://www.ameri-rack.com/ADAPTER.htm

There may be more solutions to your problem, such as using the windows installer cd/dvd to re-install Windows WITHOUT re-formatting your disk, so that the new installation will be alongside the old one, but without more information I can't know if these options would help you.

If you want to fix your current Windows installation, that may be possible as well if you have your Windows cd. If you have only an OEM installer/restore disk, chances are these options will not work for you.

Good luck
All the Files that had been copied to the HDD is corrupted so what you need to do is redo th system recovery and do not touch the NB until its finished with the prosses. it will automaticaly restart for about 10 - 15 times dont worry its perfectly fine and after about an hour and a half, it will ask you to create a new user acct and password thats the only time you could touch the NB.
