Hard drive is clicking, screen just show an arrow after i put the recovery cd in

Answers :

Hello there:
\015\012you are going to be looking at a new harddrive ,
\015\012you can try to have the old one repaired but it weill cost you
\015\012when you hear this clicking there is a little arm that is in the inside of the harddrive that is trying to read data on the platter of the drive when it is unable to read it will sit and go back and forth and continue to do this ok that is where the clicking is coming from ok?
\015\012hope that this is helpful sorry to hear about the drive best regards mike
Usually when you see symptoms such as your computer not booting into windows after finishing BIOS portion of the boot up AND an unusual sound of any kind comming from the Hard Drive, the Hard Drive is most likely defective and should be replaced. You could remove it through a USB interface (available at Tigar Direct or other Companies that allows you to connect IDE or SATA Drives to "healthy" computer to download the saved data if the O.S. is corrupted. If you try that and fail to download your saved data you may try connecting the drive as a "slave drive" in another computer (or auxillary drive with SATA). If you still cannot read the Drive its most likely "Broken" meaning either the plates or pick up arm is dislodged and the drive is a goner. Simply obtain a new Drive, you can Use up to a 500 gb and reload the O.S. and reload any data you have backed up and start "life" over again lol.
\015\012There is a "Hail Mary" procedure for temp fixing of the "Click of Death" I never tried but seems to have some merit and demonstrated on various U TUBE Clips, when trying to save data from "Broken Drives" (as opposed to less severe problems like lost index which is recoverable with some commercial software etc). It involves putting the Drive Literally in a Refrigerator Freezer in a plastic bag to avoid moisture and leaving it overnight. Set up your Recovery system so you can QUICKLY plug the drive into the usb adapter and try to quickly download any data you can find *shurg*. THe theory being that the Pick Up Arm gets reattached to the shaft it is mounted on (freezes) and if you are fast enough, you can race to your set up and quickly connect the drive and download data before it melts *shrug* It sounds like an Urban Myth but a lot of Techs swear it works; my Engineering Background kinda belays any time wasting experiments but if you have time and are a perpetual optimits its probably worth a try.
\015\012Hard Drives are relatiely inexpensive and maybe not worth all effort but in serious cases, where there is essential valuable data, not backed up, Saving it becomes the major issue and that is no easy task. The only method that is feasable is to transplant the platters from the failed drive to a new drive which can read them temp and give you a few precious moments to download your lost data. There are some companies that can do this successfully and charge accordingly: $2,500 - $5,000 for this service. Technically its complicated and little information is avaialble re doing it. Its worth the time to experiement if you want and like doing stuff like that.
\015\012Here are some hints I would guess are essential to succcess:
\015\012* Obtain the exact duplicate drive, the exact Manufacturer.
\015\012* The "New" drive should be the same capacity speed and virtually a "twin" of the failed drive.
\015\012* use a "Dremmel" or other precise cutter to open the old drive and carefully cut around the sides and do the same with the new drive UNLESS you can find another way to open the drives.
\015\012* Use in a dust free area, do not handle the platters, wear surgical gloves
\015\012*CAREFULLY remove the Platters from the old than the platters from the new and keep notes how they are deinstalled so you can reassmeble the old Platters in the New Drive Housing with the Pick up Arm s in exactly the same position as the new ones. Taking closeup pics during the process may help when re-essembling the new drive
\015\012* use tape or other material to close the New drive when finished BUT BE CAREFUL NO TO COVER THE AIR VENT HOLE.
\015\012Quickly download your data and do not try to use this "New Drive" as a permanent fix lol.l
\015\012You will probably not win a Nobel Prize but have the personal satisfaction of knowing you accomplished a difficult and unusual Task; perhaps sharing your experience here and on U Tube etc. OFCOURSE if your data is HELLA VALUABLEW like all your Swiss Bank Account secet codes etc; find a professional that has a good reputation in this procedure and only pay if data i recovered
\015\012Cheers !
