Having problems with your Toshiba Satellite A15-S157 Notebook ?

Notebook won't power up with AC Adapter plugged in

\015 Hello,\015\012I noticed my laptop starting to have trouble with my AC adapter staying powered on about three months ago. Somehow I had managed to wiggle it just right or set in the right position in order to get it to work for me. But I have pretty much left it sit still since March. A few days ago, I unplugged it and took it to a coffee shop to use and I couldn't get it to work anymore at all. I know that the battery is old. It will not maintain a charge unplugged longer than 3 minutes, so I have it plugged in constantly in order to use it. I bought it used in Nov of 2004. It's a 2003 model I believe, pentium 2 processor. The worst part about it is that I reset my iphone a day earlier and managed to get the basics loaded back on, but not any off my apps or media that I enjoy using. Not plenty of pictures and songs I would like to have asap for a project I was working on for my girlfiend. \015\012Is this a battery problem, power cord problem, or dc connection issue? Is there a way to check somewhere in Chicago without wasting a bunch of money? \015\012\015\012Thanks,\015\012Christian\015

Christian, I wish I could provide you an easy answer, but I cannot.

What has transpired, is that your DC Power Jack is bad. The DC Power Jack, is the round port where you plug your AC adapter into.

But I'm guessing, you have suspected this already.

Allow me, to show what the DC Power Jack looks like, not installed in a laptop.
This is a up close photo, of an average DC Power Jack,

Your laptop, just like all computers, operates on DC voltage. Your AC adapter, converts AC voltage to DC voltage. (Desktop computer power supply's convert AC voltage to DC voltage)

DC voltage has a Positive and a Negative.
In the DC Power Jack, the thick pin in the middle, is the Positive connection.

The outer metal shell inside the jack, is the Negative connection.
(Some DC Power Jack's, have a flat metal plate, at the back of the jack, used for the Negative connection. No outer metal shell)

In the photo link I gave you, you can see the casing of the jack, is not much larger than the adapter plug hole.
The casing is made of plastic.

When the AC adapter is plugged into this jack, the AC adapter plug can accidentally be bumped hard, or the plug yanked out.
This can cause the middle pin, to break loose from it's mounting, or the outer metal shell, to break loose from it's mounting. The mounting of both, is mounted to that small, rectangular piece of plastic.

Or break a solder joint, or joints.

Again, looking at the photo, you will note the flat metal pins, that are sticking up. One on each side, and one towards the middle.
The photo of the jack is upside down, in relation to how this jack sits on the motherboard.
The flat metal pins go down through holes in the motherboard, and are soldered on the backside.

One, or more of these solder joints can break, (Crack)

Price of an average DC Power Jack, is around $5 to $7. Price of labor to replace it, varies from $100 to $175.

The tech has to disassemble the laptop all the way. Down to just the motherboard in their hand.
The old DC Power Jack is un-soldered, and the new one soldered in place. Then the laptop is reassembled.

Sometimes, just cracked solder joints can be repaired. The solder is remelted, and removed. Then fresh solder is applied.

It's hard to find a Real Tech, and one who wil do this. Most, just want to change out the entire motherboard. Also gives them a bit of assurance, that the DC Power Jack is soldered in correctly. (It's done at the factory by a robot)

Your header for adaptor has worn out, or your AC adaptor had gone out. you can buy a UNIVERSAL adaptor which will fit any laptop from Newegg, fry's, office stores, etc. is a new adaptor does not work then you have to replace inside header. you can try taking a small knife and using it rub around inside to try to "revive" contacts. it is an expensive replacement cost
