Laptop max RAM is 2GB. Had 512mb single stick. Won't accept upgra

\015 Laptop max RAM is 2GB. Had 512mb single stick. Dual slot, so bought 2ea 1GB, PC2-5300 sticks that are backwards compatible with the 4200 it has. Here's my problem(s). When I install both 1 GB sticks, laptop wont boot. Switched them around, wont boot. Replaced old 512mb: boots fine. Mixed old 512mb with one 1GB: boots fine... sort of. Re-installed both 1GB sticks and nothing! Back to the sort of. With both 1GB and the old 512 installed for a total of 960MB. My question is two parts: How can I get the 2GB RAM I want to work? and if not: How can I get the 1.5GB To show up in Physical Memory?\015

The problem is the frequency ...you have to set into bios on the memory to read it on the lower one..so it will read both ....also if it is booting with both on but not showing into the windows properties..you have to reinstall the operating system to do that ...In-fact this is a standard procedure when you upgrade the Ram memory ..even if it reads it all ok ..you still have to reinstall...
You was kinda messy in explanations and I didnt quite understand what kinda memory you put in and it do not boot at all..but remember that this laptop will not read anything bigger than !G on one slot ..and ..if it reads them separately ...but when you put them together it is not even starting on reading devices..than you have to insert them and short the bios to reset all to the factory defaults with the memory in ...in that moment the bios settings will force to the lowest frequency ..in this case the one from the 512 unit ..
DrifterK - Did you even read his description of the problem?

The issue may be with the speed of the RAM or the Maker (possibly a no-name brand).
He stated that he tried to use 2 x 1 GB sticks of PC5300 and they are backward compatible with the PC4200 that the system asks for. I would be concerned with the fact that the computer only sees 960MB of ram with the original 512MB stick plus one of the 1GB sticks. It should read somewhere well above 1.4GB (depending on how much of the memory is being used by the systems Video due to BIOS settings).

As long as the BIOS sees the physical memory installed, it will be viewable by the OS.
Never will you have to "
reinstall the operating system to do that ...In-fact this is a standard \015\012procedure when you upgrade the Ram memory ..even if it reads it all ok \015\012..you still have to reinstall..."
How this guy got a Wiz rank with advice like this is beyond my comprehension.

What was not mentioned is the brand name of the memory being used (the new sticks). If it is some cheap-o memory, sometimes you get what you pay for. I've been burned twice getting memory off of the huge auction site, so I only get brand name stuff from legitimate retailers now.
Some good sites to hunt through are MicroCenter.com & EggHead.com (my own Personal Preferences).

If you have a local PC store, ask if they can check the sticks out for you to make certain they are good.
You might also want to check with your manufacturers web site and see if they have a newer BIOS for your system. Only flash it yourself if you completely understand the instructions, otherwise you may "brick" your Motherboard...

Sorry it's a bit late for you acts1630, but hopefully it can help the next person...
