Having problems with your Sony PCGK37 Notebook ?

PCGK33 Fan Issue

\015 Hi, I have what I believe to be a fan issue but I'm not sure if it needs to be replaced or if there's something else going on. My laptop is nearing 3 years old. The fan has slowly started making noise to the point where it is so loud (and very hot coming out the side vent) that I feel the need to immediately shut my laptop down (even though I know you shouldn't power off like that). I have an extended warranty with Best Buy and they are horrible. It was sent away for a week and I thought the fan was going to be replaced. Instead, they cleaned it and adjusted an internal control. As soon as I got it back, the fan was making noises again so obviously what they did did not rectify the problem. I don't want to use them again but I have to do something. Also, prior to sending it out, my computer was going into hibernation at random but the DC jack was broken at the time so that may have caused some issues.\015\012\015\012Any assistance or direction on what to do next would greatly be appreciated!\015

Attention Sony PCG K series noisy fans owners.
\015\012Do not try to modify/replace your fans, they are running fine.
\015\012The noise is caused by the tightly packed dust on the radiator wall of the processor.
\015\012Solution:
\015\012open the PC up, when you remove the aluminum cover you should see two black thermal tapes. Remove the one to your left and use the q-tip and vacuum cleaner to remove all dust. Put the tape back together as well as your pc.
\015\012
\015\012Congratulations! Your PC's air circulation has been restored!
\015\012The CPU is not hot anymore and the fan does not need to cool it.
\015\012As the result your fan is 70% less noisy.
\015\012If you changed your BIOS settings to "silence" your fan, put it back the way it was.
\015\012
\015\012If you have any questions, let me know:

It could be mechanical, BIOS related or software causing this.

What does the noise sound like? A high pitches squeal? A "tinny" noise like metal dragging on metal? A growl? Does the laptop get hot?

This is what Sony says about the fan issue:
NOTES:
\015\012
    \015\012
  • Please bear in mind that a fan is a mechanical device and\015\012that it is normal for it to make some noise. However, it is possible on\015\012certain VAIOs to reduce the noise.
  • \015\012
  • Please note that reducing the noise will also decrease the performances of your VAIO.
\015\012First try the following solution (which does not apply to every\015\012VAIO model):
\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Restart your VAIO.
  2. \015\012
  3. Press F2, when you see the Sony Logo.
  4. \015\012
  5. In the BIOS, select Power with the arrow keys.
  6. \015\012
  7. Select Thermal Control Strategy and press ENTER.
  8. \015\012
  9. Select Silence.
  10. \015\012
  11. Press F10 and then ENTER to save the changes and exit.
\015\012If the above option is not available in the BIOS:
\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Right-click the Powerpanel icon in the system tray.
  2. \015\012
  3. Click Edit/Create Profiles, then double-click Thermal Control Strategy-Performance.
  4. \015\012
  5. Change the settings to Quiet.
