Battery appears charged, but computer will only run when plugged in

\015 Our computer works well when plugged in to power and battery appears to be charged, but cannot be powered up on battery. When disconnected from power, and we open the lid to start it the computer tries to start up immediately (like it's in hibernation mode) and appears to have never been shut down properly. Then it goes down immediately - like the battery is dead. We have removed the battery and re-installed it - no change. We don't usually use it on battery, but have been travelling and used it until it gave us the low battery warning. We left it plugged in to re-charge. The battery light is green like it is charged, but goes out immediately when disconnected from power. The icon indicates the battery is at 91% (down from 97% a few days ago, down from 99% a few days before that - and we haven't been able to use it on battery the entire time!) Any thoughts?\015

Does your battery have one of those charge indicator panels on bottom?

also, it's possible that the connection from battery to the internals is shot..if that's the case, then you're looking at a major motherboard swap
