Massive series of problems with IBM Thinkpad

\015 I have an IBM Thinkpad R40 running Windows XP. There's nothing non-standard about the laptop. At first the computer wouldn't boot at all but the power light would turn on. Eventually I got it to boot by either removing the battery and using only the power cord, or using only the battery (not either or but sometimes the computer wanted the power cord and sometimes it wanted the battery). So the computer started actually booting, but then I started getting blue screens, most of which had different messages (including bad_pool_header, Page_Fault_in_Non_Paged_Area, Driver_IRQL_Less_or_Equal, and sometimes with no specific message at all). The errors would occur once I booted, once I got into an account, or sometimes while booting. One time I got a message saying that there had been a serious error that Windows had recovered from. This was the error code:BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : 63536F86 BCP2 : 0000000D BCP3 : 00000001BCP4 : F735C89B OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 256_1 and this was the problem: C:DOCUME~1AlyssiaLOCALS~1TempWER8eb1.dir00Mini112309-02.dmpC:DOCUME~1AlyssiaLOCALS~1TempWER8eb1.dir00sysdata.xmlSo, I thought I was in the clear until it suddenly blue screened on me again. It booted again but it blue screened, froze on the screen and then it booted one last time - this time it froze on the "starting windows" screen and there were some black horizontal rows of pixels near the center of the screen. Now it wont boot at all but the power light is turning on, which is exactly where I started.I haven't installed any new hardware, software, drivers, or anything at all. The computer is exactly the same as it was yesterday when it was working. I would love to do a system restore, but I can't get the computer to boot enough to do that at this point.I have absolutely no idea what's going on and all of my hardware knowledge is of desktops, so much as I would like to open up the laptop and make sure all the hardware looks fine I wouldn't know what I was doing or looking at.Any help would be so greatly appreciated!Thank you.\015

Probably itz either minor case of software corruption/improper ground/cpu fan..
or major case of faulty or defective main board/ram/addon/daughter cards..

..plz do check the following as in order:..
the Hardware part:..
1)a)\015\012in power-on mode, open/unplug the data/vga cable of the monitor from\015\012cabinet..see if raster or 'osd' is appearing on the monitor screen..if\015\012so monitor is ok..else replace the monitor and see..[not applicable in\015\012case of laptop]..
b) in case of laptop try to get output from\015\012external display unit/monitor using vga port..if there's proper display\015\012in there..the problem is probably with either the 'lcd' or 'ccfl' or\015\012'inverter circuit'..

2) if u hv a graphics card, replace with a standby or onboard and see..[not applicable in case of laptop]..

3) unplug mains supply..pick open/remove the cmos battery..check (above +3v)..resit..

4)\015\012see if the ram(s) is loose/faulty..open clean/remove carbon &\015\012or oxide formed on the teeth with an eraser n resit it..or replace with\015\012a standby n see..

5) a) see if ur hdd is noisy or emitting any 'ticking' noise (like 'tuk tuk' or 'kirr kirr')..
b) or if the system is not supporting either the newly installed device or itz software/driver /firmware
if so, u need either a fresh os installation or ur hdd is likely to b replaced..

6) remove/clean dust\015\012neatly..dust is non-uniform in nature n may cause\015\012jam/short circuitry/excess resistance n many more..resulting an increase\015\012in heat..

7) open the CPU Heat-Sink with fan out of the\015\012socket..put some "Heat Sink Compound" (available in local electronics\015\012chip level spare market)between the cpu/processor and the CPU Heat Sink\015\012*** fan..resit/fit it tightly in position..

8) on main/mother\015\012board..see with a debug card for mb error..may b short..look for\015\012defective capacitors(espabove1000mfd)/mosfets..go through the mb's\015\012south bridge n the circuit lie around atx connector..the crystal clock\015\012generator (if cpu isn't heating up)..

9) [in case of desktop] the\015\012smps itself may b defective/faulty..check the outputs of smps viz. 0v\015\012(black~ground); +12v(yellow); +5v (red, green~ps-on, violet~pg&\015\012grey~sb); -12v (blue);-5v(white); +3.3v(orange)..the 'oscillator and\015\012error amplifier ic',or pwm switching regulator circuit..look\015\012for defective protector-transformer/resistance (esp 4.7k)/mosfet..
check the battery n adapter [main power], in case of laptops..

the Software part:..
1) hv a licensed and UPDATED\015\012antivirus installed (i prefer avg/kaspersky,remember, without updation\015\012a full version antivirus is useless)..

2) download, install n run microsoft kb890830..http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en..

3) download n run Startup Control Panel..http://download.cnet.com/Startup-Control-Panel/3000-2094_4-10039330.html..'remove\015\012all the unnecessary startup items from here..(if u can't find what\015\012to remove, post me/us in ur comment with all the items listed in each\015\012n every tabs herein)..

4) remove all unnecessary software from add/remove programs..

5) download, install n run 'Advanced System Care Pro'..http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Pro/3000-2086_4-10399324.html..

6) disable the following:..
a)\015\012'Automatically Restart' right click on my\015\012computer->properties->advanced->startup n recovery->(un\015\012check on the) Automatically Restart;
b) 'Error Reporting' right\015\012click on\015\012my computer->properties->advanced->error reporting->disable\015\012error reporting->(uncheck on the) 'but notifyme when critical error\015\012occur'..

7) Increase the size of Virtual Memory, Initial: 1440; Maximum: 2880

if u r not a professional, always better to seek advise from ur system admin/vendor....
Sometimes, "random" errors & crashes is caused by having "bad" RAM.
\015\012Turn the laptop off.
\015\012Remove the battery.
\015\012Remove the cover to expose the RAM chips.
\015\012If there is two chips, remove one, and put it all back together, and start it up.
\015\012If you still have problems, repeat the above,
\015\012except for removing the remaining RAM chips, and re-inserting the _first_ chip that you pulled.
\015\012On another computer with a CD-writer, Google-search for 'MEMTEST86+' and download the '.ISO' file, and use your CD-writer software (Nero?)
\015\012to burn the ISO-image file to a CD-R, to create a "bootable" CD-disk.
\015\012Insert the disk into your computer, and boot from it, and run this "RAM-tester" for a few hours, to "exhaustively" test the installed RAM.

Hi there. I have a problem with my Thinkpad T30 type 2366, for which I would appreciate any suggestions to rectify. A few days ago, I booted it up but, instead of it doing so, it emitted a series of beeps and then 'hung' there with a blank screen. The beep pattern was as follows: BEEEEP--BEEP-BEEP-BEEP--BEEP-BEEP-BEEP--BEEEEP. I.e., 1 long beep, 3 short ones, 3 further short ones and then 1 long one. Looking on the net, I saw a post that suggested removing the battery, then pressing the on/off b
