Having problems with your IBM NetVista PC Desktop ?

Very slow boot on NetVista P4 1.6

\015 I Install a new copy of XP on this box and it takes hours to boot. When it does everything works fine.I went to prefetch in the registry and set the value from 3 to 2 but no help.Got 256 Ram and a 20 Gig HD\015

A couple things come to mind - bad hard drive sectors that are causing the system to retry disk reads over and over or, a device driver or program trying to load that takes a long time to time out.

If your PC boots more quickly into Safe Mode, it's most likely something loading on startup.

If it doesn't, run chkdsk on the hard drive and do a full scan for errors.

Disconnect all your peripherals except keyboard, monitor and mouse. Boot again. Any faster? If yes, it's a device connected to your PC.

Disable your startup items using the method described here:


If your system boots normally now, add things back in to the startup sequence one at a time and test after each one to identify the culprit.
