Power cord connector

\015 The power cord plug connector does not receive the power from the power cord. The power cord is suppling 20V DC which seems to be right but the laptop is not seeing any power. I would like to get at the connector, but so far cannot get to the mother board where it seem to be attached. How can you open things up enough to let me fix the problem?\015

Answers :

From your description it sounds like the motherboard power connector is either broken or needs to be resoldered. That will require that the laptop be completelty disassembled as you need acess to the connector pads to solder. The connector is cheap but tend to be unique to a few models. Believe it or not ebay is pretty good for finding these. Expect to pay about $1-$5 for the connector. Get a couple as the shipping will cost more than the part and these tend to go about every years or two.

\015\012As far as instructions for disassembling the laptop you either need to find the shop manual for it or find a website that shows the instructions. If you search for hp zd7168cl power jack replacement you should find a few. Look for one that makes the most sense to you not just the first one. That will mean you won;t get a headache from figuring out what they are trying to tell you , you can just do it. Learned that one the hard way ;-]

\015\012This is a easy repair but a lot of work to get at it. If you can do it then you have saved yourself the cost of a replacement motherboard. You can also send the board out to several places that cann replace the jack if you can't so you do have options.
All computers casing are not the same so you need to look very carefully when you working or you will break something…start by taking the screws in the back and take out and set aside the battery, mem, etc. Some may have a plastic luck that you need to insert a small screwdriver to have the casing open…you the only one that can make that judgment so carefully s work around them…
\015\012However before you start all of this see if you can see if any object stuck in the connector on the computer…then see if you can clean the pins and that by using a pencil tip and scratching the pins…the lead on the pencil make good contact…let me know
