Most of the laptops made today rely on a 'Silpad", a thin square of silicone, to conduct heat away from the CPU and into the Heat sink. Often this is not enough as the laptop ages. A solution that will require a shop or an experienced technician is this: The Laptop will need to be disassembled, the "heatsink" removed and Thermal grease added in place of the Silpad. I recommend "Arctic Silver" it has ground silver in it and is the best heat conductive grease available. If you choose to do this yourself, make sure to only coat the small square on the CPU that comes in contact with the heatsink, gooping it all over the top of the CPU will make things worse. My daughters both have HP laptops and I've done this treatment to both and they both run significantly cooler. A cooler CPU works much more efficiently. This is a pretty complex repair and not for the faint of heart, I would recommend a shop do this, it should cost under $50. Good luck.
