Your best bet is to do a "repair installation" of windows use the cds that came with your laptop but be aware it is possible that some recovery processes can destroy any existing data documents etc.
\015\012If you need to get information off it first then remove the hard drive, but yourself and enclusure of the correct type eg SATA or IDE and use that to connect your hard drive to another computer to get information off it.
The best solution is to contact HP Support, and request the Restoration Disk for your laptop, if you do not have one. (Recovery Disk)

Install the disk in your optical drive, (CD/DVD drive), follow the instructions.
When it asks whether you wish to do a Fresh Install or a Repair, do a Repair.

Computer manufacturers have refrained from giving the disk out, simply do to the fact that many users do not use it.
Also saves the computer manufacturer money. ($$$$) Plus a lot of users are skittish about using the disk, and would rather refer their computer to a repair shop.

The computer manufacturer puts the restoration files on the harddrive in the computer, and there are specific keys, or a key, to press to restore the computer. (Or you do a System Restore when Windows is running)

{Your key is F11, right after you press the Power On button. After you press the Power On button, tap the F11 key in 2 second intervals. You should then see HP Backup and Recovery. Go to Advanced options, select System recovery, and click Next. Again, it may not work, in which case you will need the Recovery Disk}

Doesn't do much good if you can't access restore, or Windows, or you have a graphics problem, and have a blank monitor screen, huh?

You may have received a Recovery Disk with your laptop. It is a CD disk with the above printed on it. (Or something very similar)

Upon receiving a computer, and the very first time you start the computer, you are asked if you wish to make a backup. This is your Restoration Disk.
Most of us ignore this. Problem is, that you are only asked once.

To obtain a Restoration Disk is simple. Go to HP Support, then to Contact HP. I prefer talking to a real person over the phone.

(Scroll down to the heading -> Call HP, with your eyes. Click on -> Technical support after you buy. It does not cost to use technical support, when calling to request a Restoration Disk)

The last time I requested a Restoration Disk the disk was free. The Shipping and Handling was not.
At the time, the fee was $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.

You need pertinent information that is located on the bottom of your laptop. It's in that white Service Tag.
p/n is Product Number
s/n is Serial Number
It's best to write this down, and have it ready before calling.
