Having problems with your HP Pavilion dv1000 Notebook ?

My computer has been very slow and I would like to take it back to factory settings. Do I reformat the hard drive or do I do something else??

Answers :

You can reinstall windows or use your restore dvd/cd that is something like using a hammer to open eggs. Seeing how this is summer you need to make sure your slow isn't hardware. Put your hand on
\015\012the back of the case where the power supply is and feel how warm the air is. It should be warm but not hot. If your computer runs normal then slow after it has run for a bit or has locked up then you may need to have you case and fans cleaned out. That can be done with compressed air but should be done with a vacuum. You need to be careful not to over speed the fans. If you have gas heat, pets, smoke or the computer is in the kitchen then you may need to do this once or twice a year for a desktop and more often for laptops.
\015\012Next thing is to make sure you have enough free space on C. Windows gets rather grumpy when it has low disk space on C. It doesn't help that everything installs to C by default. Run the disk cleanup utility under start-all programs-accessories-system tools and see if that helps. Also try deleting downloads or un-installing programs you no longer use.
\015\012If you don't think its running hot and you have space then we can try the software stuff.
\015\012I would look at what software you have running. The usual slow making suspects are things like monitoring or imaging programs. As an example you have a 3 in 1 printer and when you install it it loads a management suite that now runs all of the time. Or you have a digital camera and you install the drivers and it loads a management suite of software and image programs and they run all of the time. Or you use MSN and ot loads from start and runs all of the time or a p2p sharing program.
\015\012On most of these they will have an option for not starting or loading all the time. It is worth the time to try finding the guilty piece of software as you would probably reinstall it again and be right back at the same place.
\015\012To see whats running easiest place to look is under start-all programs-startup Anything placed there will start when windows starts. Anything in there can be dragged out (and back in if needed) and dropped in another part of that menu. There are a few things that are quite safe to get rid of. Office toolbar or acrobat speed loader are two prime examples. The less in there, the better. Other programs such as MSN you will have to start and then look under options and see how it connects. Make sure it doesn't start when windows starts. There will be some programs that have no options to disable. On these you may need to un-install and then reinstall and carefully check if you can disable any options. If that won't work consider if you need/use the program at all. When you find the one piece of software that is doing this all of a sudden your pc will be running much faster. It will not be as fast as a fresh install but the fresh install doesn't have any software running either.
\015\012If none of this works and you are set on reinstalling windows. You should do a few things. One is to copy off all of your "stuff" ie documents, email and account setting, favorites. That way when you are running again you can just import them and have everything. If you save off your stuff then I would format the drive. This will cleanup any errors and give you a fresh start. Format it in NTFS when given the option.
\015\012This is a bit longer answer to your question but you should spend a bit of time checking as you can find yourself right back at slow pretty quick. If you know what to look for after your install then you can keep te slow from reoccurring for a log time.
The best way is use recovery discs if you have them. If you do not have them, but you do have an operating system disc and a drivers disc you can reformat the hard drive (don't forget to back up your data, this process erases everything), reinstall the operating system, then reinstall all your drivers & software.

Keep in mind that any software you have added since the computer was new will have to be reinstalled as well.
