Clock in computer will not maintain time and date

\015 I have a HP Pavillion desk top computer, model a350n. The clock in the computer will not maintain correct time and date if power is removed from computer and then repowered the next day. Time reverts to 1/1/2001, 1:00 am. If power remains to computer after computer is turned off, date and time are correct on startup. What is the cause? Is there a CMOS battery inside the computer? Would a dead CMOS battery cause this? Would there be other obvious problems if the battery was dead? Where would it be located inside?\015

Answers :

There is a wafer lithium battery that maintains the power onboard the motherboard to maintain settings. The batter is located on the top side about midboard. Open the side of the computer case so that you have access to the motherboard. Before you remove the battery, you may want to carefully vacuum out the dust in the case and then use a can of air (available from Radio Shack or comuter supply store) to blow out the remaining dust.
\015\012You will need a replacement CR2032 Lithium batteery.
\015\012To replace the battery:
\015\0121 Remove the side panel that has the thumbscrews. See page 99.
\015\0122 Gently lay the PC on its side.
\015\0123 Remove any cabling, if necessary, to reach the battery.
\015\0124 Remove any memory modules, if necessary, to reach the battery.
\015\0125 With a flat screwdriver, press the metal latch that holds the battery in its
\015\012socket away from the battery. The battery will pop out.
\015\0126 Install the new CR2032 battery in the socket, with the positive (+) side
\015\012facing up.
\015\012.
\015\012This should take care of your lost date.
\015\012Please rate this solution. Thanks.
You need to replace the CMOS battery--a flat battery about the size of a quarter.
When you open the case, you will see it attached to the motherboard. Use caution when removing it from the holder--one side usually has a little tab that you can push to one side to release the battery.
You need a #2032 battery.
