Having problems with your HP Compaq Presario SR1520NX (PX801AA) PC Desktop ?

When i try to turn on the computer an amber light comes on and nothing else happens what is wrong?

Answers :

I'm willing to wager it's a hardware issue. I'll go even further, and state it's the Power Supply.

The Presario Sr1520NX is now 5 years old.
May I ask if the unit has been cleaned out inside? A can of compressed air for computers, has been used?
Or the tower unit has been taken to a computer shop, to have them clean it?

A person can be the best housekeeper in the world, but personal computers get dust, dirt, hair, and other foreign objects inside them.

The cooling fans bring this foreign material in. The inside of the computer needs to be cleaned out regularly, in order to keep functioning properly.

So does the power supply.
Looking at the back of your Presario, view the top.
Where the power cord from the surge protector plugs in, is the power supply. It's a rectangular box shape, and you can see the fan for it.

If you see dust, or dirt here, the inside of the computer is dirty also.

The fan that you see for the Power Supply cools the power supply, as well as draws air through the computer case. Doesn't take very much of this foreign debris, to drop the cooling capacity of that fan, tremendously.

Heat = Wasted Energy
As the power supply heats up, it looses power, and tries to make up for it. Eventually the power supply reaches a state where it simply burns out components inside.

There is enough power for lights, and maybe spinning the fans, but not enough to power the Processor.

ALL the lights use less than 1 Watt.
EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.
A typical processor can use anywhere from 55 Watts to 125 Watts.

(Yours uses 62 Watts. It's an AMD Sempron 3100+
It operates at 1.8Ghz, and uses 1.40 Volts DC)

My recommendation is to replace the power supply. About 75% of the computers that come to my shop, have this problem.
I also recommend cleaning out the inside of the computer, with a can of compressed air for computers.

1.Computer off, power cord is unplugged from the surge protector.

(Unplugging the power cord from the back of the power supply is a No-No! This can create a voltage spike, and surge through the power supply.

Can burn it out, as well as go on through the computer, rendering it useless. Granted, the power supply for your computer has been diagnosed as unserviceable, but a surge can still go through it, into the computer!)

2.Open the computer cover. Viewing the computer from the back, there is a Thumb Screw halfway up on the right side. Turn it CounterClockwise to loosen. It doesn't come all the way out.

There is a curved area on the side panel at the back. You put your fingers in it, and pull straight back. The side cover slides back so far, then is removed towards the outside.

Take the can of compressed air, and break the plastic lock tab off of the top. (It's there for shipping)
Insert the plastic 'straw' into the nozzle.

Bring the plastic straw into the inside of the computer. Hold it away from the cables, and hardware components. I advise starting at the top left corner, and going across to the right. Squeeze the trigger in all the way as you start, let go when you reach the Right side.

Drop down a row, start from the left, and go across again. Keep using this procedure until you are at the bottom. Tilt the top of the computer over a little towards you, and spray out the bottom.

Your computer will be nice, and clean, when you go to install the new power supply.

This is an example of how to replace your power supply.
(You have an ATX12V power supply. It is rated at 300 Watts. (Maximum Wattage)

Any power supply that states it is an ATX, and 300 Watt will work.
Average price is around $25 to $30 US.
This is an example. It is Not a recommendation for this website, Not the power supply manufacturer.
(Although I have personally used both to my satisfaction,
