Dear sir,

Welcome to Fixya
No worry ! I will help you!
According to you, your PC switch is faulty.I am right?
Before replacing switch, you have to confirm the problem is from switch side,or from any other side. To confirm this, remove side cover of your PC cabinet, search for front panel connections of mother board, check for loose contacts. If it is correct, remove power button jack from the board.Take one plat head screwdriver, short +ve and -ve ends of MBD frontpanel power ON switch terminals. If your PC starts normally, PC switch is faulty, you have to replace switch. If PC fails to switch on problem is not from switch side.

Steps To Replace PC power ON switch.

Remove both side covers of cabinet then, remove front glossy panel which is having power on switch. After removing glossy front panel, open the lock of power ON switch, then replace it with new switch.

I think it helps

If this is a Gateway GT4022 Desktop PC, here is the main support page at Gateway Support,

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/GTModels/1009051/1009051nv.shtml

I wanted you to have this information, because I would like you to test if it's the Power On switch, before you replace it.

I would like you to click on - User Guides - in the list.
Now click on 8510943 - Gateway Computer User Guide (6-Bay Micro uBTX Case) {In blue}

This is a PDF file, and it may take a few seconds before you see the first page. Please watch the download progress bar, and let the file download all the way, before looking through the file.
There is a way to save this file to your computer.

1) Computer sitting on a table, and unplugged from power, remove all cables.
{Note* If you are unfamiliar with where the cables go, make yourself notes, and a drawing at this time. Most cable placement is self-explanatory due to color coding.

However though, the speaker wires can be plugged back in wrong, if you have a sub-woofer speaker, and satellite speakers}

2) Press the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of Five seconds. Open the computer case side panel.

3) Remove the Side Panel:
Facing the back of the computer you will note there are two large Thumb screws on the Left side, of the side panel.

One in an upper position, one in a lower position. Unscrew them to the left. They probably won't come out all the way, and will just dangle.

The end of the side panel has a formed 'hump' where you can put your fingers. According to Gateway, you are supposed to swing the back of the side panel, away from the back of the computer.

Admittedly this is a new one on me. I don't have one in the shop, and haven't worked on this particular model.
{Generally with a setup like this, the side panel is pulled towards the rear of the computer about an inch or so, then the side panel is lifted up, and out}

Where the raised hump is on the side panel, is swung away from the computer, towards the front of the computer.

[If my directions seem too simple in nature at times, please pardon this. I don't know your computer hardware prowess, and don't won't to leave any details out]

BEFORE you go any further. (Not shouting) TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case to relieve your body of Static electricity. Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components in a computer.
You may not even see it, or feel it.

4) Remove the Front Bezel:

Make a drawing and notation of which direction the cable connector for the Front Bezel cable goes, on the motherboard.

The connector can only be plugged back in, in one direction. There are two rows of pins sticking up out of the motherboard. (Front Panel header)

There is one pin missing. The connector also has a blocked off socket hole, to match.

The Front Bezel cable has three sets of wires in it.
A) The Power On switch wires ( 2 wires - Black and White twisted together)

B) The Power On LED light
( 2 wires - Red and White twisted together.

Not sure about this one. These may be the Harddrive Activity LED wires. You'll know immediately when looking at the LED lights, and where they are placed. Same with the twisted pair of wires below)

C) Harddrive Activity LED. (2 wires - Blue and White twisted together)

On the main support Gateway link I gave you, you can view this cable.
Click on,
Components,
Under the Cases and Hardware heading, click on
8015638R - Chassis Switch LED Cable

Click on - Product Views - in blue
Click on - Main View - in blue

In order to have the Front Bezel in your hand, and easier access to removing the Power On button, this cable should be disconnected from the motherboard.

Looking inside the computer case towards the Front Bezel, (Front Panel), you will see three spring tabs.
One towards the top, one in the middle, and one towards the bottom.

Generally these are plastic, and are formed out of the plastic front bezel itself.
Rectangular shaped flat pieces of plastic.
These are pressed towards the inside of the computer.

The User Guide illustrates the placement of these spring tabs.
(Page 52)
The spring tab is only pressed so far in to release the front bezel. Pressing them too far in, or using too much pressure, can break them.

The Front Bezel swings away from the computer case. You may find that you have to press the top spring tab in, hold the case apart at the top with your fingers a little bit, then press the middle tab, and finally the bottom tab.

At this point you can test to see if it is indeed the Power On switch that is the problem.
Go to the Front Panel header on the motherboard.

This is the area of pins on the motherboard, where the cable from the Front Bezel plugged into.

Going back to the main support menu, click on Components once more.

Under the Motherboards heading click on -
4006105R - FIC KTBC51G Motherboard - in blue.

(The motherboard was made by First International Computer, Inc. for Gateway. The model number is KTBC51G)

Click on Product Views
Click on W- Front Panel Connector

Note where it has PW_SW printed next to the two pins on the connector.
Note also where it has a white bar printed above the two PW_SW pins.
Power Switch.

Looking at the photo these pins are located on the right. There are 2 pins, 2 pins, and no pin.
The second set of pins down, are the Power On switch pins.

(If you wish you can copy this photo to your My Pictures folder. Just right-click on it, then left-click on Save Image As.

In the next small window go down the box that has File name before it, and left-click once in the box.
{It will have a 24 in blue highlight in the box}
Type something you will recognize easily. I typed Gateway GT4022 Front Panel header.

Click on Save in the lower right corner.
Now you can go to your My Pictures folder, and double-click on the photo.
You can now turn the photo to the position you wish, and also enlarge it)

With the computer plugged into power, and a flat tipped metal screwdriver, that is not too wide, you can touch the two Power On pins MOMENTARILY, and see if the computer comes on.

The pins are just touched for no longer than two seconds. There will be a tiny spark. Keep your hand on the insulated grip of the screwdriver.

No you do not stand the chance of getting shocked to death. I just wanted to advise you of the small spark. (Not trying to be rude)

If the computer comes on, your Power On switch is bad.

The Power On switch is held in with a plastic holder. If you look close you will see a plastic tab, or tabs that can be GENTLY spread, to remove the switch by sliding, or lifting it out.

Computers generate heat when they run. Over time this plastic holder may have become brittle, due to heat, and age.

That tab, or tabs, could break quite easily. I find using a hair dryer set to medium heat, and moving it back, and forth across the plastic tab/s, helps to soften the plastic so that it does not break. Do not overheat them.

The Power On switch may be a certain shape, and size. It may be that only Gateway can provide this switch, since it is part of their cable. (8015638R Chassis Switch LED Cable)

It may be available on someplace such as Ebay.

You may find this switch is comparable, to the original one installed,

http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html

It may not be. If it isn't the correct size, and shape, it isn't going to fit back in that plastic holder.
You may not be all that concerned with the aesthetic appeal of the computer, and just want it to work.

If this should be the case, you could have the switch hang outside of the computer case.
Admittedly not very professional in appearance, but the computer will work once more.

The two Black and White wires will have to be cut on the Front Bezel cable.
I would advise cutting them about two inches away from the existing Power On switch.

Cut the connector end/s off of the new Power On switch. Strip the insulation back about one -half inch on all wires, (Power On switch, and Front bezel cable power on switch wires)

Divide the end of each wire into two thick strands.
It will then look like a V.

Using one wire from the Power On switch, and one wire from the Front Bezel cable, the 'leg' of one V will be twisted together with the leg of the other wire's V leg.
Then all wires are twisted together.

This is an Electricians Knot.

Use Black plastic electrical tape to cover the splice.
(One single wrap of Black plastic electrical tape will insulate 500 Volts DC. The Voltage here is 12 Volts)

A professional repair would be to solder the wires, and use Heat Shrink Tubing.

Apologize for the length of this solution.
