Gateway 831GM Eratic Fan Noise

\015 Ok, I have a Gateway 831GM with a loud rear system fan. \015\012The fan is a 4pin 90mm hydrolic ATC brand. I opened the chasis and cleaned out all of the dust then noticed that the rear system fan was still eratic - fluctuating RPM's - higher then lower, slow then fast.\015\012I ordered the exact fan then replaced the old fan.\015\012The PC worked well for a little while; several hours, but it started the eratic RPM's again with the new fan.\015\012Could this be a power supply problem, if so, if I have a bad power supply could the power supply have ruined the new fan? I hate to have to shotgun parts.\015\012Thank you.\015

Hi,
\015\012
\015\012This can be caused by several things:
\015\012
\015\0121. Bad temp sensor
\015\0122. Bad voltage, but that will usually cause the whole system to restart
\015\0123. Too low maximum temp setting inside the chassis(setting is in bios), often denote as max case temp.
\015\012
\015\012One way to bypass the problem is rig the fan to a molex adapter with a variable voltage molex to 2/3/4pin fan connector and adjust the speed to the maximum quiet setting.
\015\012
\015\012The 831's did run a bit warm so if the case temp setting is set to low it will fluxuate quite a bit. Try adjusting the max case temp up around 50c just to see if that does it, if it does either use the variable voltage dial solution or add a second case fan that's always on, prefferably a low RPM running direct off molex so it will reduce the average temp and therby the need of the monitored case fan to rev up.

Loud noise Hi. I'm hearing a loud noise coming from the tower of my Gateway 506GR tower this morning. I'm assuming it's the fan, which is a lot louder than normal. It sounds like it's just running really loud.
