Having problems with your Gateway 827GM PC Desktop ?

PC constantly reboots after external HD error

\015 I have a Gateway 827GM PC with Windows XP Media Center, 384 MB Ram and about 2.0 Ghz. Recently I've had problems transferring files from my PC hard drive (HD) to a recently purchased Fantom II Green Drive (1 TB). One time, while playing a video from the new external HD, the computer froze, I restarted it and had problems with the computer not working properly.\015\012\015\012It finally started working normal again and then was transferring files form my internal HD to the external HD with no issues. However, today, while transferring files, I used the "Up" function in the folder on my internal HD (that was currently transferring files) in order to look at the next files I wanted to transfer to my external HD. At this point, the computer froze (I guess I am not supposed to even use the PC while a file transfer is in effect???), I restarted it, and it is in one continuous reboot sequence. \015\012\015\012I tried starting in safe mode which didn't work. I tried other limited Boot sequence options which didn't work (though I admit I don't really know what I'm doing there).\015\012\015\012Please help - any advice is much appreciated!\015\012\015\012Thanks,\015\012Jack\015

Firstly remove the external drive. If that works, great! Otherwise continue.

If that didn't work, then you'll need to figure out a bit more. When you go into safe-mode windows will list off each file as it loads it. Note the file it crashes on! Insert your XP disk and run the recovery console. From here on, simply copy the file you need to your hard drive, example:

If the system crashed on (fake file): C:\\WINDOWS\\this.is.important

Then run a command like:
copy this.is.important C:\\WINDOWS\\this.is.important

You may need to remove the file beforehand using the 'delete' command:
delete C:\\WINDOWS\\this.is.important

If none of these options work, or you don't want to fiddle with the command line, try a professional computer repair service!
Put in your recovery disc and follow the instructions on it, you may need to reinstall the drivers and os....i just worked on a laptop with media center and thats what needed to be done, it was the same with the rebooting and video stuff, make sure not to activate the mcafee antivirus if it's out of date or subscription is up, it will not allow your puter to run properly, the other thing i discovered with that...hope this helps hun....shia
