Having problems with your E-Machines T2042 CELERON 2 GHz 128 MB 40 GB HDD Dsktop Computer System PC Desktop ?

Desktop Lockup Hello. I have an emachines model T2042 desktop and it has started to lock up and the activity light below the power button blinks at a steady interval, and I can hear a rhythmic "knocking" inside the machine. I have to unplug the power cord from the rear of the machine to get it to power cycle, and then turn it on again. It's a Celeron, 2GHZ machine, with 128MB of original memory. Could this be a power supply issue? I know it's an old machine, but was planning on giving to my sist

Answers :

Remove the cover to look at the power supply fan while it is powered on ( if needed). The fan should be spinning at a steady rate. If you observe fluctuations in the rotation, these are early indications of a malfunctioning power supply unit. As for the knocking sound, can you hear it better or determine its source if the cover is removed? It could be the fan hitting the side of the power supply or wiring. The good news is that if it IS the power supply, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. Your sister may not be out of luck!
But if the light is blinking- and orange - this is definite indicator that the power supply is going. Still a good idea to replace the p/s unit and let her use it. With RAM being as cheap as it is, I'd also recommend bumping it up to 512 minimum if not a 1 GB.
