Having problems with your E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC ?

EMachines T6528 desktop will not boot up

\015 My eMachines desktop power turns on but the hard drive does not boot. The yellow hard drive indicator light comes on when I first turn press the on-off button but no other lights as it used to when the hard drive engaged in the past. I cannot get the CD ROM to read a recovery CD. When I power on the computer, all that happens is the fan engages and continues to run. I can power down the computer from the on-off button. The monitor does not turn on when I turn on the computer but it does work - I connected it to my laptop to verify.\015

Answers :

The power supply fan runs from either 5V or 12 so that only tells you that the voltage for fan operation is present.\015\012
\015\012If you don't have a multimeter already, I would highly advise that you buy one.\015\012They are available for <$20 US at auto parts stores and electronic outlets.\015\012If you have one, remove the couple of screws that hold on the side panel that will let you access the guts.\015\012For an initial check, turn the power off and if your cables are long enough, don't bother to disconnect anything since changing the load on the supply might make it appear OK again.\015\012Turn it back on once you have it in position and are not moving it anymore. \015\012
\015\012Locate the main connector from PS to the mother board, insert the negative probe into any connector hole with a black wire.\015\012
\015\012All supplies will have 5V, +-12V (these are the primary voltages used by many devices) and you will find (probably) -5 and some that seem stable but undefined which are used for monitoring supply health.\015\012
\015\012Many supplies have the voltages listed on a label which often will tell you the orientation (location) of the various voltages.\015\012
\015\012I think you have a supply dying but you need to measure its outputs before assuming I'm right - been wrong before.\015\012
\015\012While you have the case open, but power off, clean out the dust bunnies you'll find using a clean paintbrush that has been dampened and made nearly dry again or buy a 'can of air' to blow them out.\015\012I recommend against vacuuming due to the horrendous static charge they can build and this is death to most semiconductors.\015\012
\015\012If you have established that the supply is failed or failing, you can buy a new one (don't repair) for about 20% of the cost of the parts inside - yeah, it's nuts.\015\012Your system will probably use the ATX form factor (so it fits mechanically) and any of these will have the basic connectors but examine the pictures and compare them to yours to be sure that some non-standard connectors your system might have are present on  the new one.\015\012If your supply says 350 watts, add another 50 or 100 watts to the replacement; it won't cost much more but will let the supply run with less stress.\015\012
\015\012If you feel the need, you might want to label stuff before you disconnect things if you haven't done it before but the connectors are made so you can't screw up without trying real hard.   \015\012    \015\012
You have a blown motherboard. The fact that the fan runs and there is no monitor and the orange light remains on standby are all classic symptoms of the failure of the processor socket. There are capacitors along one side of the processor socket which form part of the function of the processor socket. When these fail, the processor socket fails too. In addition to this the pc's power supply often fails because the feed to the processor is the small square plug beside it, with 2 x yellow and 2 x black cables. On this basi some items within the pc can be heard running whilst others are not.
\015\012
\015\012Replacing the power supply and the motherboard ALWAYS sorts this problem out. My experience with these Emachines and similar computers sold throught the same retailer networks, including model such as Medion,Advent,Packard Bell,Compaq Ei Systems to name but a few all suffer with the same problem.
