Having problems with your E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC ?

I have a eMachine with XP and tried to use restore disks. The first disk started working then got an error message about output to A:/Ghosterr. I called the tech support # and was told it was out of warranty, that my disks were damaged and I couldn't buy new ones. Said I had to find local technician to work on it. Does this sound correct? Reading here it sounds like I can try that F8 trick above to restore?

Answers :

I am not sure what you mean by the F8 Trick. If you mean hitting F8 (or F5) at boot up time, that will get you to a boot menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode with network, without network, and a few other options, then yes, that is the trick.
\015\012Depending upon when your system sarted to give you problems, you might try to boot into Safe Mode - straight Safe, no options -amd when it comes up IF it asks you whether you want SAFE mode or SYSTEM RESTORE Mode, choose SYSTEM RESTORE.
\015\012Then, once it has settled into RESTORE mode and the options are displayed, think very carefully about when the system started to go south on you, when it started to give you problems.
\015\012If, for example, if it was last Monday, December 21, 2009, you should choose System Restore for the first full day before that; for example, chose System Restore for December 19 or 20. Give it a full day prior to the problems having begun. But be absolutely certain of the date, as this is critical.
\015\012Once you are sure, and you have chosen the right date, then let System Restore start to work, and follow all the instructions. Specifically, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR COMPUTER until it is finished with SYSTEM RESTORE.
\015\012It will take a while, sometimes an hour or more to accomplish what it needs to do. Let it finish. Windows will tell you when it has finished, and it will restart into a full session of Windows, from the day or two before - from the day you chose. See if this has solved your problem. It is one of the best features of Windows XP Pro, in that it automatically saves an image of the system on a regular basis, and especially right before it does a Microsoft system upgrade, knowing that often times a system upgrade can backfire on your system. So it gives you a way out of the problem by providing the System Restore from right before the Windows Upgrade.
\015\012Good Luck and Happy New Year.
