Emachine t3256 turns on and off --is there a thermal switch ?

Answers :

Not likely. What IS likely is that your CPU is overheating and is sending a signal causing the system to shut down to prevent damage to it. Pull the side cover off (right side panel as you're facing the rear of the PC, typically 2 screws or a movable latch holding it in place) Look for the following: 1) cooling fins clogged with dirt and or hair; 2) cooling fan laden with dirt and turning very slowly or not at all or 3) both conditions exist. Cure these ills by getting a can of compressed air from your local hardware store or computer retailer and blow the dirt out of the fins and the fan. Power the PC on and make sure that the fan is spinning rapidly. This will most likely resolve your problem. Another quick thought is to check to be sure that a wire has not gotten caught in the blades of the fan somehow, keeping it from spinning. If this is the case, get a small cable tie and pull it away from the CPU fan, securing it to other wires to keep this from continuing to be a problem. If this is NOT your problem, if the cooling fins are clean and the fan is spinning quickly, then the next solution would be to try replacing the Power Supply, as it may have taken a mild surge. My first answer IS your most likely problem, however. If after cleaning the CPU fan and fins the fan still doesn't spin rapidly like it should, then the fan needs to be replaced. You should be able to pick up this fan from a local computer repair shop, Radio Shack or Best Buy. You'll need to know which processor you have (Intel or AMD), and there's usually a sticker on the front of the PC proudly proclaiming which one you have onboard. If you're not used to doing hardware repairs, consider taking the PC to a repair facility you can trust and have a professional pull and replace the dead fan. Best Wishes, Jim
