I have a dell xps 420. and i have no idea whats going on. my girlfriend was on the computer, and i had to slide the tower over a little bit. but when i moved it the screen went blue and said hardware malfunction. so i turned it off. but when i tried to turn it back on all it not much happened. i pressed the power button and the fans get loud for a second then quite down. and the lights on the tower light up1 3 and 4 and turn off and the 1 2 and 3 turn on and the symbol that looks like a can (sor

There may have been something that disconnected when you moved the tower. First check all of the cables at the back of the tower. Make sure they are all properly inserted into the connections. Disconnect the power cord and re-insert it to make sure it is fully seated. If all of the cables in the back are ok and the problem still happens then you will need to dis-assemble the computer case(with the power disconnected of course) and check all the hardware for proper installation. Make sure you are properly grounded befor touching any computer components or static electricity could discharge and damage the hardware. Use a grounding cable that attaches to your wrist or make sure you touch the computer case to release any static in your body. It is possible that a video card may have come loose slightly when the tower was moved. So you will need to remove the video card and re-insert it to make sure it is properly seated. Memory DIMMS can be removed and re-installed. Also verify all the cable connections for the power supply have not come loose. While the case is open you can also use the can of compressed air to clean the case and motherboard of dust and debris. From the description of your problem it sounds like a power supply issue. Hopefully you will find some loose wire or connection that will fix your problem. If everything checks out good inside then the power supply may have went out when you moved the case..
It appears you have a harddisk issue. Dell's light pattern codes for the XPS 420 indicate a 1-2-3 light is "Another failure has occurred". Then it goes on to say "ensure that all harrdrive cables are properly connected to the system board. If there is an error message on the screen identifying a problem device, check the device to make sure it's functioning properly.

\015\012While I doubt the harddrive cable has comes loose, that is th easiest to check. Look at the both ends of the ribbon or SATA cable and ensure they are attached securely to the motherboard/harddisk controller and to the harddisk.

\015\012What I suspect happened was that in moving the computer, a bump occurred which caused the read/write heads to hit the platter and caused the harddrive to crash.

\015\012One way to confirm that is to put the drive in an external drive enclosure and connect it to another computer via usb port and see if you can read the contents. If you can, it indicates another hardware problem. If not, your drive is damaged and not bootable. It's time to repalce the drive.
