Having problems with your Dell Vostro 1710 Laptop ?

BOOTMGR is compressed

\015 I actually have a Dell Vostro 1720 Laptop, with Intel Core Duo T9550. I have Windows Vista Business (Premium?) with XP Professional SP3 Downgrade. My laptop is less than 2 weeks old\342\200\246 Stupidly I checked the Compress C: Drive box.Dell says only way to fix is to replace the hard drive. Anyone know if this is true? Since I think I have 2 Operating Systems I\342\200\231m unclear on how to proceed. Vista seems to be the underlying OS that the computer actually runs on with XP Pro piggybacking? Any help would be SOOOOO appreciated! BTW, I'm not very tech savvy about the underlying ways a computer actually works.\015

You are best off checking to see if you can get to the system restore point from the main menu of XP, assuming you can get that far. If XP starts then you can Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\\System32\\Restore\\Rstrui.exe, and then click OK and follow the numbered procedure below.
\015\012
\015\012If not then You should also have a system restore disk suopplied witht he laptop so run this to restore your system back to original setup. If not then use the XP boot disk and trhen let it start and when prompted choose the restore option (usually R) when prompetd on the first screen. Then select the default Windows XP install (usually option 1 and press return when prompted. If you have a system admin password enter this when promted or just press {Return}. This will take to to a black and white text based screen and you sold see a C:\\ prompt. Type the following:
\015\012
\015\012cd C:\\windows\\system32\\restore then hit {Enter} or {Return}
\015\012
\015\012then type the following
\015\012
\015\012dir rest*.* then hit {Enter} or {Return}
\015\012
\015\012you should see a list of files including one called [rstrui.exe]
\015\012
\015\012If you see this then you can tyope the following
\015\012
\015\012rstrui then hit {Enter} or {Return}
\015\012
\015\012this will then allow you to choose a date and time to restore the system to. Follw the procedure below.
\015\012
\015\012
    \015\012
  1. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next . \015\012
  2. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the system checkpoint. In the On this list select the restore point area, click an entry that is named "Guided Help (Registry Backup)," and then click Next. If a System Restore message appears that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make, click OK. \015\012
  3. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration and then restarts the computer. \015\012
  4. Log on to the computer. When the System Restore confirmation page appears, click OK..
No such thing as piggybacking.
\015\012You are running Windows XP only.
\015\012Right-click on C: drive and select Properties
\015\012In the General tab there will be a checkbox to Compress this drive...
\015\012Uncheck it and apply to all subfolders.
\015\012
\015\012If it is unchecked, check it and let it run for a second or two then cancel.
\015\012Now uncheck it and apply to all subfolders.
\015\012
\015\012You can see exactly which files are compressed by opening My Computer
\015\012Select Tools > Folder Options > View from the top menu
\015\012Find and select the option to show compressed files/folders in a different color.
\015\012All compressed files/folders should now be blue.
\015\012
\015\012If this helps please vote for my solution.
