Dell Optiplex GX240 performance problem and fan noise

\015 Hi,\015\012\015\012I have a second-hand Dell Optiplex GX240 desktop for around three years now. From the beginning, the noise of the cooling fan in my system seems to be is little over the normal for any desktop. Do I have to replace the fan or something?\015\012\015\012The system has become unusually very slow in the recent months. Does this mean it needs an upgrade?\015\012\015\012Thank you for your suggestions\015

Answers :

The fans on Dell power supplies are rather noisy and prone to failure. Find out if the noisy fan is inside the case or inside the power supply. If your computer has become slow you should scan for viruses and spyware. If the scan does not improve things it may be time for an upgrade.

The GX240 only supports up to 1 gigabyte of RAM, you should have the maximum installed. I would not spend more than $50 upgrading this computer, you can find better used ones in the $100-$200 range.

Noisy fan Hi there - I have a Dell Dimension 5150 desktop and in the last couple of months the fan has made more noise and not only that - when I look in TASK MANAGER - my processor is sometimes on 100% (along with the noisy fan). Are they connected? Sometimes - it's something called svchost.exe - which is hogging the processor. Are they connected? or is it two different problems? Apart from this (it's not constant noise - just every so often) - the pc works fine. Thanks - June
