Having problems with your Dell OptiPlex 170L PC Desktop ?

How do i change the memory bus speed on my dell optiplex 170l? The CPU is an Intel Celeron 2.4GHz. The mother board processor speed is 400MHz and the Bios indicates a memory bus speed of 266MHz and does not seem to have an adjustable option. If the CPU can run at 400MHz then why can't I get the memory bus to run at 400MHz? Origanuly this system was shipped with 2 X 128MB 333MHz DDR CL2.5 Non-ECC DIMM modules and yet the bios indicates memory speed at 266MHz.

The following is stated upon your computer being a Dell Optiplex 170L

1) The BIOS program, and version that's on your Dell Optiplex, does not allow voltage changes, nor FSB changes, nor changing ram memory parameters, manually.

2) Your motherboard uses an Intel 865GV motherboard chipset.

Supporting Data:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/op170l/en/UG/specs.htm

Scroll down the page to the heading - Computer Information
Read across from - Chip set

This is the specifications of the Intel 865GV chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets

Looking across from - 865GV you will see this Intel chipset supports Processors with either a 400MHz, 533MHz, or 800MHz Front Side Bus. (FSB)

Also supports DDR Sdram at 266MegaHertz, 333MHz, or 400MHz
(PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200 respectively)

Ram memory typically operates at half, of the FSB that the Processor does.
(Unless you are overclocking)

In your case you have an Intel Celeron 2.4GHz processor that has an FSB of 400MHz, and uses a Socket 478 processor socket.

(Northwood-128 Core. sSpec numbers, SL6VU, or SL6W4, or SL6XG,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intel_celeron_microprocessors#.22Northwood-128.22_.28130_nm.29

BIOS in this computer 'sees' the Processor that is installed, and sets the Voltage accordingly, which also changes the FSB support.

Half of 400MHz is closer to 266MHz, than 333MHz is.

DDR Sdram, and on up, has an SPD incorporated.
Serial Presence Detect.

This is a way for the BIOS program to automatically detect, or access the information about the ram module. (Or modules. Module = Stick)

BIOS looks at the Processor information, and the Ram Memory information, and automatically sets the parameters accordingly.

Why did Dell put that PC2700 ram memory in then?
Your guess is as good as mine.

1) More than likely it was cheaper at the time, than PC2100.

2) PC2700 had come out, and PC2100 was considered outdated.
(Rightfully so)

3) It was a budget computer bought for a good price at the time. The Intel Celeron is a budget processor, because it has half the L2 cache, that a comparable Pentium 4 processor does.

Saved the computer manufacturer money, and provided a lower costing computer that would sell more easily.

They had a new bunch of PC2700, and threw it in.

IF, you could change the voltage used for the Processor, i would advise against it.
This is overclocking.

Not only will the FSB of the Processor will be changed, but so will the ram memory's FSB support.

This goes on down the line to change what the PCI slots will use. They operate at 33MHz. They won't if you change the voltage for the Processor.

Nothing will work.

What to do?

That motherboard will support Pentium 4 processors that use an 800MHz FSB, and also use a Socket 478 processor socket.

If you want to use PC3200 ram memory, (DDR Sdram at 400MHz), you need a better processor.

Suggestion would be to look for a Pentium 4 that fits into a Socket 478 processor socket.

Has an 800MHz FSB, and is of the Northwood Core architecture, when looking for an upgrade of a processor.
You checked in the right place as far as looking in the BIOS, however, memory and CPU sockets do not necessarily have the same buss speed. My FSB runs at 1066Mhz and my RAM at 800Mhz, it all depends on what type of RAM you buy as to the bus speed. You can up the bus speed on your RAM if you wish to reduce bottle-necking, but I've only done that a few times. In order to adjust anything, you must set the settings to manual. Be careful when you change this stuff around though, voltages must also be adjusted accordingly.
