Having problems with your Dell Latitude D600 Notebook ?

I have a Dell Latitude D600 that came with a 60gb hard drive. I had a D600 previous to this one with a 40gb hard drive and I swapped this hard drive into the newer D600 since I had all my important data stored on it already. Just the other day when I was performing some maintenance on the D600, I accidentally dropped the 40gb on the floor when it was out of the computer. I thought everything was fine because it seemed to boot up when I re-installed it, but I hadn't actually tried using it until

Hi,
Dropping the hard drive has caused shock damage to the read arms and the platters (internal disks).

Removing the platters from the case will not solve the problem as these platters are put together by a precision robot in a dust free environment, so opening the drive case will no doubt cause more damage to the drive making it inaccessible and rendering it useless.

The only thing i can think of you trying is to put back the 60BG hard drive, find out what type of drive you have, its either an ATA or serial ATA drive and buy a 2 & 1/2 inch hard drive enclosure.

Put the damaged drive in the freezer for at least an hour (YES!! i said freezer). After an hour or so take the drive out of the freezer, put it in the enclosure and plug it up the laptop.
Because the hard drive is frozen you have a certain amount of time to access the data and copy it to the 60BG drive before it warms up and starts to show the same symptoms again. Don't worry, freezing drive is quite common place when trying to recover data from them.
Alternatively you can sent it to a professional data recovery company but the cost is astronomical around $200 per drive.
