Dell Inspirion E1505 internet connection problem

\015 I purchased a used laptop and I am having problems getting it to connect to my wireless linksys. The linksys is working correctly as there are 2 other computers linking up to it.It appears to be something monked up with the laptop.It\342\200\231s a Dell Inspirion E1505.I don\342\200\231t even know where to begin as I am almost a computer tard.I have followed the \342\200\234diagnose connection problems\342\200\235 and did a \342\200\234repair\342\200\235 thing.Sometimes it works momentarily, then loses connection and info says limited or no connection.Someone please help!nightgirl\015

NightGirl,

What I would try to do is first check to see if there is a static IP address. You check this by goto START-MY NETWORK PLACES-VIEW NETWORK CONNECTIONS (in the top left hand side) From there, you should see your LAN,HIGH-SPEED INTERNET then under it you should see Local Area Connection. If there is more than one Local Area Connection connected, then disconnect both of them and try only connection one of them, (i couldn't tell you which one as I'm not there to see which is the onboard NIC) It should be connected, but apparently in your case it may not stay on. Right click on the Local Area Connection, then goto PROPERTIES. The properties box is going to open up. Make sure that Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) is checked, then highlight it and click on the PROPERTIES box, here is where you want to make sure that the (OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY) is selected, if not, then select it and do the same for the bottom (OBTAIN DNS SERVER ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY)
Have you properly entered in all of your network's info into the laptop?  Sometimes security settings can block access to the Wireless network.  Here's a quick way to diagnose network connection.  (Make sure you know the IP address of your router!)\015\012
\015\0121. open your Command Prompt\015\012
\015\0122. type in the following "ping (Router IP address example: 192.168.1.1 " after entering the following press enter. \015\012(you should see a series of lines that say how long the packet took to make a round trip...if not, then you have no connection to the wirless network)\015\012
\015\0123. if the results of the ping test read "100% loss" you know that connection is definately not established. \015\012
\015\012Your next course of action should be to inspect your laptop's settings and ensure that your laptop can "see" the router.  If your laptop's NIC ( Network Interface Card ) cannot detect the network it is possible that the NIC is bad or your router isn't set to "Broadcast" your SSID ( Service Set Identifier ) aka network.  this following article might be able to assit you in the troubleshooting process more throughly.  I hope this to be of some help to you! \015\012
