Having problems with your Dell Inspiron 8500 Notebook ?

Display failure after having lid closed while running

\015 When i let the 8500 run with the lid closed, after some time, the display stops working and there is only a thin, 1-2 pixel high line at the bottom of the display. after a few minutes of powered-off rest,\302\240this\302\240problem\302\240is\302\240gone.the machine also suffers from intermittent hard disk reading problems at bootup, which occur irregularly. they seem to be unrelated to the hard disk itself, since it runs fine in an external USB case.\015

The solution to your problem is probably not the monitor, follow these steps:
1. Connect and boot your computer with 2 different monitors.
2. If it does'nt work with either of them the problem is from another computer component.
Posible Problems:
1. Your video card may be damaged or moved from it's slot.
2. Your proccessor may be damaged.
Posible solutions:
1. If you have computer hardware knowledge open the case
2. Remove the Video card.
3. Insert it back or insert another video card from a friend.(if it works with your friends card, obviously the video card is the problem)
4. Restart your computer and see if it works.
Now if it does'nt work after that you will have to replace your proccessor with one that works, from a friend, because you say your computer boots but if your monitor doesn't work you don't know for sure if it boots corectly.
The steps above are only for people with hardware knowledge, if that is not your case you should contact a computer service.

It is possible that is a virus, especially as you did nothing that could have damaged the hardware. However - one other thing that may be causing this is a failed power supply. It may be that the computer is no longer getting enough power to run the graphics card properly. You could try removing any PCI cards and extra fans (appart from the CPU fan obviously) to see if that allows the PSU to provide more power to the graphics card. But there's no guarantees...how old is the PSU and is it branded?

Also, did you download anything whilst on the internet before hand? Or click yes to any of those warning prompts?

Id say the chances of it being a BIOS destryoing virus arnt too high, unless you already have suspicions about this.

Another thing that can cause ýour problem is if the CPU is dead or if clock frequencies/memory timings are wrongly set. You might want to try reseting the CMOS by removing the mobo battery...although its hard to see how this could be the case if you haven't messed around with it.
Does the computer give you the single POST beep? Is there no BEEP? (Do you have the system speaker attached, check this first ) Or is the beep different to usual? If you do have a working speaker, you should be able to rule out a few things. I mean, if there is no continual series of beeps, it's not your memory, if you don't hear a long beep, its not your graphics card. Reset your CMOS (check your motherboard manual, usually involves moving a jumper then moving it back).
