Vertical Lines on Dell Insprion 6400

\015 Hey,I have a vertical line going through my screen from top to bottom on the left hand side. It comes on as soon as I turn on my computer. However, I noticed when I apply a little force on the lid of the laptop it goes away. Does this mean it needs some sort of tightening...? Hopefully I don't have to get the whole screen replaced. Thanks for the help!\015

Sorry, but it is most likely an LCD panel gone bad. I worked in IT all throughout college, and I can't tell you how many things I saw just like that - it doesn't work until you tweak/twist the laptop just the right way, and then it works. Tracking down what's causing it would be a bear, and it's more than likely something that's not replaceable or fixable (i.e. something on the circuit board).

I'm guessing that you're out of warranty? If you are and you want to check the internal screen connections...tilt the screen all the way back, and pop the top plate off (the plastic piece right above the keyboard that has the power button and says "Inspiron 6400") with a small regular screwdriver. Then there should be a few small screws holding the screen to the laptop body. The front of the screen (the plastic trim around it) comes off by taking the round gray rubber pieces off and removing the screws behind it. There are more than likely some more snap fittings holding it together that you might break trying to take off, but usually the screws are enough to hold it together well even after a few are broken (superglue always works as well).

After you've got that off, you should be able to see some connections. If not, keep digging deeper in the laptop til you see them. You might just try taking out and reseating all of the connections - I've had electronics "magically" start working again after just reseating some connections. Also, I'd recommend taking a piece of paper to lay out and label the screws as you take them off, and also numbering the group so that you know what order to put them back on (can't tell you how many times I've put a laptop all back together, only to realize I forgot the screw that I should have put in first). Obviously, don't attempt all this if you don't feel comfortable with it - find a buddy who is, and please make sure you're out of warranty first - it will void your warranty (you can find out on Dell's support website). Just a little disclaimer as well - I haven't specifically taken a 6400 apart, but I'm sitting here typing on mine, and it looks like that's how it should come apart. Best of luck!
It \015\012 may be due to bad LCD screen, LCD cable or Video board. If you dare, open the monitor and tighten the cable connections Go to www..chub.com .for details of How To.
